NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Opening the spring season with a home regatta, the Christopher Newport sailing team finished second out of six teams at the CNU Women's. The Captains finished with 96 points, including a 54-point showing from A Division and a 42-point effort by the B division boat.
Racing was limited to Saturday with 12 completed finishes recorded. St. Mary's (Md.) earned the win with 89 total points, edging out CNU by seven points.
All 12 boats sailed together with the CNU B division boat capturing a second-place finish with 42 points. The A division tandem finished fourth overall. Sailing in the B boat was
Laura Smith with
Ellie McFall and the A division pair was
Grace Watlington and
Gail Schneider.
Both tandems finished with a pair of bullets, winning back-to-back races. Watlington and Schneider won in the fourth and fifth races while Smith and McFall earned their wins in races eight and nine. The Captains B division boat had a stellar run with eight straight top-three finishes including the two wins, four runner-up efforts, and two third-place finishes.
The A division boat registered nine top-five finishes in the 12 completed races while the B division boat matched that effort with nine as well.
