NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University opened the softball season last weekend with a pair of home victories, and now the eighth-ranked Captains hit the road for the first time in 2024.
Keith Parr's squad travels to Danville, Va., on Sunday to take on the Cougars of Averett University. The early-season doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
The Captains opened the new season last Saturday at home with a pair of victories over Ferrum College. CNU took the opener, 6-0, and then completed the sweep with a 7-1 triumph in the nightcap.Junior pitchers
Jamie Martin and
Kate Alger both earned victories by allowing a total of just one run on seven hits in the sweep of the Panthers. Martin, who tossed the shutout in the opener, was named the Coast-To-Coast Pitcher of the Week.
Freshman
Candace Slaw also had an impressive day to start to her career as a Captain last Saturday, and was named the C2C Player of the Week for her efforts. Slaw posted seven hits in eight at-bats in the doubleheader, and became just the 15th freshman in program history to record a four-hit game when she was 4-for-4 in the nightcap of the twin bill. She drove in a pair and scored four times while also adding three stolen bases as the leadoff hitter for the Captains. CNU's offense registered 13 runs on 21 hits in the sweep over Ferrum to open the new campaign.
Averett University, meanwhile, opened the season on Wednesday with a pair of losses to Pfeiffer University, 10-6 and 5-2. The Cougars have two games on Saturday vs. Methodist before hosting the Captains on Sunday.
