NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Facing their second straight top-25 test, the 24th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will kick off the home portion of its 2024 schedule on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains welcome No. 16 Roanoke to Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the weekend, both CNU and Roanoke sit at 1-0 on the season. For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
The Captains are looking to build upon their huge victory in the season opener when they knocked off No. 7 Washington & Lee, 12-10, on Wednesday. After breaking a 3-3 deadlock with five minutes left in the first half, CNU never lost its lead over the final 35 minutes of regulation to seal the win.
Julia Iapicca sank four second-half goals to help keep the momentum planted on Christopher Newport's sideline, while
Kelsey Winters also added two strikes and a pair of assists. With her four points, Winters moved into third place on the school's all-time scoring list. She now has 317 points, placing her two shy of matching CNU Hall of Famer Ashton Marshall's total from 2011-14. Fellow legend Meghan Harkey set the program record of 346 from 2008-11.
Winters' performance on Wednesday also moved her closer to making league history. She is just one assist shy of tying the all-time Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference record of 206, which was established by Mary Washington's Allie Kimmelman from 2009-12.
While Iapicca and Winters were headlining the offensive attack on Wednesday, the defense was equally impressive.
Hadley Chadwick notched nine saves, including four on free-position attempts. Meanwhile,
Brookelyn Morrison and
Kate Lamendola both had two takeaways, while
Maddie Rusinko helped anchor a suffocating effort by the back line.
Reaching milestones with their defensive efforts on Wednesday, Chadwick recorded her 100th career save, becoming the 10th Captain to reach that mark.
Emma Jackson also snatched her 100th ground ball, placing her 20th on the program's career charts.
Several other Captains are also fast-approaching career milestones.
Syd Guidi is four goals away from the 100th of her career, while
Eleanor Collins is six draws shy of 100.
Roanoke enters the weekend after defeating St. Mary's (Md.), 12-11, last Saturday in Salem. Entering halftime deadlocked at six, the Maroons opened the second half with back-to-back goals and never lost their advantage. Grace Koutouzis led the victors with four points, while Libby Bowman also had a hat-trick. Defensively, Kyleigh Chickering had 13 saves on the way to the win.
Slotted second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Poll, Roanoke advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season while compiling a 16-4 record. Sophia Chickering, Addison Schmidt, and Natalie Mason headline the returners from the 2023 squad after all three earned All-Region accolades for their work last year.
In 19 previous match-ups between the two programs, Roanoke holds a 10-9 edge in the series. Last year, the Maroons picked up a 12-7 win despite a pair of goals from Guidi and
Hope Hunter. Winters also had five points for the Captains, including four assists.
After Saturday's bout, Christopher Newport will remain at home for a midweek showdown with Randolph-Macon at 7 p.m. on February 28.
