NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will make its 2024 home debut on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains host Berry in a non-conference tilt at Jennings Family Stadium.

Entering the weekend, CNU sits at 1-0 on the season after knocking off Hampden-Sydney, 15-9, last Saturday. Meanwhile, Berry is 1-2 after splitting a pair of games last weekend following a season-opening setback against No. 1 Salisbury on February 4.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video broadcast of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

In the opener at Hampden-Sydney last Saturday, Christopher Newport overcame an early three-goal deficit after stringing together nine straight strikes during an electric run in the second and third quarters. Alex Brendes led the Captains with five points, while Andrew Cook and Robby Adams also contributed hat-tricks. Additionally, Warner Cabaniss won 20 of his 23 faceoffs and secured 13 ground balls.

For their work against the Tigers, Brendes was named the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week, while Cabaniss earned a spot on the USILA National Team of the Week.

With his performance last week, Brendes moved into a tie for second on CNU's all-time scoring list. The fifth-year phenom now has 232 career points, matching Matt Crist's total from 2015-18. Drew Miller also inched closer to history on Saturday. Following his efforts against the Tigers, he sits just two assists away from 100 and five goals shy of the same benchmark. Currently, Crist is the only player in school history to reach 100 career goals and 100 career assists.

While several offensive standouts are approaching historic numbers, Zac Hanway reached a pair on the other end of the field against Hampden-Sydney. The two-time All-American collected his 600th save and 50th career win during the bout with the Tigers. His 50 triumphs are the most in program history, while his 603 saves trail only Matt Hayden on the all-time list. Hayden set the school record with 635 during his decorated tenure from 2014-17.

After opening the season with a 29-6 setback against No. 1 Salisbury during a neutral-site battle earlier this month in North Carolina, the Vikings rebounded last weekend. On Saturday, Berry knocked off LaGrange, 21-7, before dropping a hard-fought 12-11 decision against Piedmont just 24 hours later.

In the squad's first three games, Michael Beirne has already landed 10 goals, including a pair against the top-ranked Sea Gulls and six in the win over LaGrange. Meanwhile, Michael McKenzie and Jackson Blaylock have 10 points apiece. Defensively, Henry Tynes has a .434 save percentage and 14.52 goals-against-average. His 23 total stops this year currently rank ninth in the NCAA.

Saturday's bout will be just the second all-time meeting between Berry and CNU. The two programs last met in 2018 when the Captains posted a 10-9 victory at Charlotte Christian High School in North Carolina.

Following this weekend, Christopher Newport will return to action next Saturday when the program welcomes Stevenson to town for a 4 p.m. showdown.
