WOMEN'S ATLANTIC COAST TOURNAMENT - Full Scores
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- On a beautiful weekend for sailing, the Christopher Newport women's sailing team took on a competitive field at the Women's Atlantic Coast Tournament and finished sixth overall. The Captains earned the strong finish among a fleet of 16 teams and over 75 women.Â
As a team, the Captains finished with 219 points for the sixth-place effort, falling out of the top five by just 20 points where USCGA finished. George Washington University won the regatta with 144 points while Jacksonville (160), St. Mary's (162), and Bowdoin (173) were the other teams in the top five.Â
The B division performance from
Laura Smith and
Gabby Byrne led the way as the Captains finished third in B division sailing with 88 points. The duo were exceptional for Christopher Newport with four bullets in the last eight races. Those four victories carried CNU up the standings as they also came with two top-five finishes and another top ten. Byrne and Smith crossed the finish line outside of the top-ten only three times in 15 completed races.Â
In A division sailing the Captains finished 10th with 131 points.
Grace Watlington and
Gail Schneider paired up for the weekend and posted nine top-ten finishes in 15 races. That grouping included a regatta-best second place finish in the fifth race of the day on Saturday.Â
Christopher Newport is now scheduled to travel to Maryland next weekend for the Luce Regatta hosted by Washington College (Md.).Â
