ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team was back in action this weekend, taking on the fleet at three events in Maryland and Williamsburg. At the Chesapeake Invitational hosted by the United States Naval Academy the Captains finished fifth for their second straight weekend with a top-five finish. Also at Navy, CNU competed in the Faye Bennet MAISA Women's Singlehanded event while the rest of the team traveled up I-64 to compete at William and Mary in the Kingsmill Cup where the Captains finished seventh.
After an opening weekend that saw low winds factor into the amount of sailing conducted, the second weekend would not face such adversity. In the Chesapeake Invitational, 11 total races were sailed while the fleets at the Kingsmill Cup managed 12 and the Faye Bennet completed 14.
CNU captured a fifth place showing out of six teams at the Chesapeake Invitational, scoring 442 total points across three divisions of racing. All three boats finished in a row in the final standings with 13th, 14th, and 15th place finishes. Joshua Bendura sailed with
Sebastian Beavers for 135 points in the A division boat;
Laura Smith and
Ellie McFall captured 14th with 149 points in the C division boat; and, the B divsiion boat finished with 158 points with
Aston Atherton and Berend Vandermeer competing for the Captains.
Atherton and Vandermeer recorded the best finish of the weekend for CNU with a fourth place showing in race number nine while the team combined for four total top-ten finishes in the 18-boat fleet.
While her teammates sailed in nearby waters,
Grace Watlington took on the course at the singlehanded conference championship. The sophomore captured a pair of seventh place finishes and added one tenth-place showing in the 14 completed races to finish with 194 total points. She edged out Lily Flack (St. Mary's Md.) and Harper Cartwright (Georgetown) in the event.
Finally, the CNU Sailing Team added a seventh place effort out of eight teams in Williamsburg with 148 total points in two divisions. The Captains' A division tandem of Noah Hubbard and
Carson Rozell finished with 86 points and a seventh place showing while the B division boat finished sixth with 62 points behind Walter Roou and Grace Booth.
Roou and Booth finished strong with a fourth and third-place effort in the final rotation while adding another third place showing in race number four.
