Tessa Trate and Raine Weis Earn VaSID All-State Women's Tennis Honors

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- A pair of Christopher Newport women's tennis stars were named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State team on Thursday afternoon as Tessa Trate garnered first team honors in both singles and doubles while Raine Weis joined her on the first team in doubles and added second team plaudits in singles play.

One of the Captains' top tandems to ever play together at Christopher Newport, Trate and Weis have already accomplished unprecedented success as a pair. The duo are just the third set of Captains to garner All-State recognition multiple times in their career joining McKinney Harwood/Alexandra Drye (2015, 2017) and Johanna Ranta-aho/Olivia Reed (2019, 2020). Trate was also a second team All-State pick as a freshman with Amanda Yermal, becoming the first CNU player in history to earn All-State doubles honors three times in her career.

It marks the fifth consecutive season that multiple Captains have earned All-State recognition.

In doubles play, Trate and Weis finished the year ranked No. 22 in the national poll and were selected as alternates for the NCAA Division III National Doubles Championships. They finished their second year as playing partners with a 15-8 overall record while running their career mark to 25-14 with 19 wins at No. 1 doubles. The CNU pairing already rank sixth in career doubles wins with the third most wins all-time at No. 1.

This season, Trate and Weis registered one of the finest victories in program history when they toppled eventual national champion Brooke Despriet and Katherine Petty (Sewanee) on February 17 with an 8-7 (5) win. The Captains also won six of their first seven matches in the spring, including a pair of wins against Division I competition. Trate and Weis were also ranked No. 7 in the Atlantic South rankings in the final poll of the season.

Additionally, Trate made it a first team sweep as one of six players to earn the top honor in the state for her second career All-State selection. The junior finished the year ranked No. 12 in the region after capturing 10 wins including eight at No. 2 singles. Weis was selected a second-team All-State pick after finishing No. 16 in the Atlantic South with nine wins while playing all 14 of her matches at No. 1 singles in the Spring.

Christopher Newport finished the season ranked No. 37 in the nation after posting a 5-11 record during the season.
