NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Wrapping up the regular season on Saturday at noon, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will host fourth-ranked Salisbury in a Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference bout on Senior Day at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the weekend, the Captains are 10-6 on the season, including 5-5 at home. Meanwhile, Salisbury is 11-3 overall and 6-2 on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
In addition to being the regular season finale, Saturday will also serve as Christopher Newport's annual Senior Day. Prior to the contest, the Captains will honor the five members of the program who will be punctuating their career in 2023. Together, fifth-year standouts
Kendall Krause and
Riley Rafterry-Lee along with fourth-year seniors
Lindsay Connell and
Taylor Schoolar and team manager
Sydney Watts have made an indelible mark on the program.
During their tenures, they have helped Christopher Newport climb as high as 20th in the IWLCA National Coaches Poll while spending 11 total weeks in the rankings. Along the way, they have knocked off five nationally-ranked opponents and advanced to the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship during each of the past two seasons.
On an individual level, Krause is a reigning All-American who owns the program record with 77 career starts while slotting fourth with 76 takeaways and eighth with 128 ground balls. Meanwhile, Rafterry-Lee has also starred for five seasons, making 67 career appearances, which stands as the ninth-most by a defender in school history.
Along with the fifth-year phenoms, Schoolar slots 10th on the program's all-time charts with a 10.81 goals-against-average during her time in the crease, while Connell has appeared in 41 games and deposited 12 goals, including three against nationally-ranked competition. Meanwhile, Watts broke into the starting lineup immediately as a freshman before transitioning to a role on the sidelines as a student assistant coach.
So far this season, Krause and Rafterry-Lee are tied for ninth in the conference with 15 caused turnovers, while Schoolar has a 10.68 goals-against-average and a victory in the season opener at Virginia Wesleyan on February 18. Additionally, Connell has taken part in nine games and registered her first goal of the year in a triumph over Denison on March 26.
Salisbury comes to town on a six-game winning streak, including an 11-9 triumph over No. 6 TCNJ last Saturday. That marked the squad's fifth win over a nationally-ranked opponent this year after previously upending No. 8 Gettysburg, No. 9 York (Pa.), No. 10 Franklin & Marshall, and No. 12 Colby.
Despite playing a tough slate of opponents, the Sea Gulls have allowed just 7.36 goals per game, which ranks 23rd in the NCAA. At the forefront of the defense, Kaitlyn Hunsinger slots 20th in the country with a .525 save percentage. Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, Mary Hanzsche is second in the league with 24 assists, and Emma Skoglund is sixth with 50 points.
In the all-time series between the two programs, Salisbury holds a 25-0 advantage. Last year, the Sea Gulls picked up a pair of victories, including a 17-7 triumph in the conference championship. During the title bout, Skoglund had five points for the victors, while
Kelsey Winters added four for the Captains.
Eleanor Collins also deposited a pair of goals during the contest.
After the regular season, the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament will begin with the semifinals on May 3. Final seedings will be determined following the conclusion of Saturday's action.
