NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University will travel to Salem, Va., on Tuesday for a softball doubleheader at Roanoke College. The twin bill is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
Keith Parr's squad, National Champions a year ago, is now 23-5 after two shutout victories on Sunday over Averett University at Captains Park by scores of 11-0 and 16-0. Both games went just five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Roanoke is riding a four-game winning streak and is 17-9 heading into Tuesday's action. The Maroons are also coming off a couple of shutout victories following a sweep over Shenandoah University on Sunday in Salem by scores of 5-0 and 9-0.
The doubleheader has been postponed twice earlier this season due to weather concerns. The teams have met 26 times in the all-time series, and the Captains have a 19-7 record vs. the Maroons. CNU has won nine straight games in the series, and last year at Captains Park won both games in five innings by scores of 8-0 and 9-0. Â
CNU junior third baseman
Brooke Greaver continues to post big numbers at the plate for the Captains, and is now hitting .413 with 13 home runs and 37 runs batted in over the first 28 games. Greaver hit a grand slam on Sunday vs. Averett, and is eighth on the all-time home run list in school history with 23. Greaver's season slugging percentage is 1.013, currently the highest-ever in CNU history.Â
Sophomore pitcher
Kate Alger recorded her second no-hitter of the season on Sunday, a five-inning effort that saw her strike out eight Cougars while allowing no hits and two walks. She faced just 18 batters over five frames, and upped her record to 12-2. Earlier this season on March 5th, Alger no-hit Bethany College in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic in Raleigh, N.C. Alger has now struck out 140 batters this season in 101.1 innings of work while walking just 21. She has a season ERA of just 1.24.
Following Tuesday's games, the Captains head to Maryland on Sunday to wrap up the regular season schedule. CNU will play a doubleheader at top-ranked Salisbury University Sunday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Christopher Newport will return to Salisbury May 11-13 for the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
