NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - It will be a busy weekend for the second-ranked Christopher Newport University softball team. The Captains, 20-4 on the season and defending National Champions, will host the University of Mary Washington on Friday at Captains Park. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
Keith Parr's squad will also host a twin bill on Sunday, as the Captains play host to the Cougars of Averett University. Sunday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. following Senior Day ceremonies.
The Captains enter the weekend action ranked only behind Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference rival Salisbury. CNU is 20-4 so far this season, while the Eagles of Mary Washington are 18-16. The Captains had won 13 straight games before falling at Lynchburg on Monday in the second game of a doubleheader, 8-2. UMW dropped a pair of games on Wednesday at Southern Virginia, 4-2 and 6-1. UMW has now lost four of its last six games.
The Captains and Mary Washington have played 68 games over the years, and CNU holds a 58-10 lead in the all-time series. The Captains have won the last eight meetings in the series, which dates back to 1989. CNU is 24-1 all-time at home vs. UMW.
Junior third baseman
Brooke Greaver tops the Captains in batting average (.424), home runs (12) and runs batted in (31) over the first 24 games. She also leads the Captains in hits (28), doubles (6), total bases (70), on-base percentage (.506), and slugging percentage (1.061). Greaver is currently 8th on the school's all-time home run list with 22, and was honored by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) twice earlier this season as the Player of the Week in the league.
Sophomore pitcher
Kate Alger is 11-1 so far this season, and has an earned run average (ERA) of 1.25. Alger has pitched 89.1 innings and has struck out 125 batters, while walking only 19. She is currently 13th in the nation in total strikeouts, and has been named the Pitcher of the Week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference the last two weeks, and three times in all this season.
Following Friday's games, the Captains will be home again on Sunday, hosting Averett University at Captains Park. The doubleheader, the last currently scheduled home games of the regular season for the Captains, is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. following Senior Day ceremonies.
Christopher Newport concludes the regular season next week by traveling to Roanoke on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30...and a twin bill next Sunday, April 30th, at Salisbury starting at 1:30 p.m. The Captains will return to Salisbury for the 2023 C2C Tournament, which will take place May 11-13.
