HAMPTON, Va. -- For the third straight year, the Christopher Newport sailing team qualified to compete for the War Memorial Conference Championship after capturing a second-place finish at the Luce Trophy regatta. The top six finishers qualified for the conference championship, including the Captains with an 82-point performance at their home event.Â
On Saturday, the wind was too strong to complete more than four races but Sunday brought much better conditions and eight more races were completed to round out the event in Hampton.Â
Christopher Newport won the A division sailing as sophomores
Josh Bendura and
Sebastian Beavers sailed together for all 12 races and finished with 35 total points. They beat out Princeton (40 pts) and regatta champ Hampton (48 pts) for the top spot after sailing to four bullets and nine top-three finishes in 12 completed races.Â
The B division boat also had a successful weekend, finishing second behind only Hampton. The Captains finished with 47 points with a couple of different tandems. For the first ten races it was sophomore

Summer Duba. Atherton and McFall notched two wins and nine top-five finishes in ten races.Â
As a team, the Captains finished with six total wins and seven runner-up efforts. CNU finished out of the top five only five times in 24 races and scored 82 total points to finish comfortably in second place. The Pirates won the event with 67 points and CNU downed Princeton by 12 points. Also qualifying for the War Memorial were Drexel (146 pts), Syracuse (151 pts), and Rochester (158 pts).
CNU advances to the War Memorial which will be hosted by Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. on October 28-29.Â
