MAISA Men's Singlehanded Conference Championship - Carl Van Duyne Trophy
Ten races were completed on Saturday and four more on Sunday as Christopher Newport sophomore
Aston Atherton finished 17th out of 18 singlehanded sailors in the conference championship regatta. Sailing against the best singlehanded sailors from one of the most competitive leagues, Atherton finished with 195 points and edged out Hobart and William Smith's Jack Carter with 215 points.Â
Atherton had a great start, finishing in the top-ten in the first race on Saturday. He backed up that performance with another hot start on Sunday, finishing a regatta-best ninth.Â
Charleston Fall Interconference - Mason Chrisman Trophy
The Captains were forced to contend with an intense current on Saturday but the water cooperated more on Sunday, allowing for a good day of sailing. The host College of Charleston took first and second place in the eight-team event while Christopher Newport finished eighth with 389 total points. The A division boat finished with 177 points, just five behind the University of Miami, and the Captains' B division boat finished with 212 total points.Â
All 16 boats sailed as one division and Christopher Newport's A boat finished 14th while the B division tandem finished 16th. Sophomore Joshua Bendura raced in all 14 starts for the A division boat while pairing with rookie
Grace Booth and sophomore
Sebastian Beavers. The highlight of the weekend came in race number five when Beavers and Bendura crossed the finish line fifth for the best Captains effort in the 14 completed races. It was one of three top-ten finishes for CNU. In the B division boat,
Walter Roou sailed with
Carson Rozell.
Atlantic Coast Women's Championships Round 1B
Ten races were completed on Saturday and seven more on Sunday as Christopher Newport raced to a 14th place finish out of 17 teams. The Captains finished with 383 points including 215 from A division and 168 from the B division pairing.Â
Sailing in B division,
Grace Watlington and
Ellie McFall had an outstanding showing with a 12th place finish. They were among the top half of finishers eight times in 17 completed races including a fourth place showing in the fifth race on Saturday. The duo captured ten top-ten finishes in B division.Â
The A division boat added five top-ten finishes and wrapped up the event with 215 total points. Finishing 13th in division, the Captains paired
Laura Smith and
Grace Keene.Â
