CNU Sailing Wins Webb/Woollum Regatta; Captains Also Notch Top Five Finish at C of C Fall Women's

HAMPTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team hosted the annual Webb/Woollum Regatta this weekend, capturing a team win in the ten-team event. The Captains ripped off a near perfect run in A division, finishing with 17 points to run away with the A division win to help Christopher Newport edge out Hampton for the win by two points. CNU also competed in the College of Charleston Fall Women's, adding another top-five finish by finishing fourth in the nine-team field.

In the home event, the Captains jumped out to a quick lead and held on as Hampton closed the gap to two points with just one rotation remaining. Needing to hold on, CNU finished with a bullet in A division and a fourth place finish in the final B division race to fend off the upset-minded Pirates.

In the A division boat, Josh Bendura and Sebastian Beavers picked up six wins in ten races and three more second-place finishes. Their worst effort of the weekend was still outstanding, with a fifth-place showing in the ninth race. The B division tandem finished fourth, with 41 points, as Aston Atherton and Berrend Vandermeer. sailed together for the Captains. The young tandem snagged a pair of runner-up finishes and crossed the line outside of the top-five only once in ten races.

As the Captains polished off a win at the Webb/Woollum Regatta, the women's team took to the water in Charleston, South Carolina for the C of C Fall Women's. Earning the team's first win in the final race of the weekend, Christopher Newport finished strong and garnered a fourth-place finish with 262 total points. The A division boat finished seventh with 118 points and the B division boat wasn't far behind, capturing a 10th-place showing with 144 total points.

Sailing the entire fleet as one division, the Captains paired Laura Smith with Grace Keene in the A division boat and Grace Watlington and Ellie McFall together in the B division boat. Smith and Keene snagged 11 top-ten finishes in the 18-team division including one second-place finish. Watlington and McFall added the bullet at the end to a strong showing overall that also included a second and third place finish.
