VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --
The 16th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will wrap up a brief two-game road swing on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when the Captains battle Virginia Wesleyan at Birdsong Field.

Entering the midweek match-up, Christopher Newport boasts a 1-1 record and sits at 0-1 on the road. Meanwhile, Virginia Wesleyan is 0-2 overall and 0-1 at home.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

The Captains are coming off of a 2-0 setback during a defensive struggle at Franklin & Marshall on Sunday. Against the Diplomats, Gabi Gray registered four saves, while Brooke Billhimer contributed a defensive save. Marcella Sabbagh also cleaned up several deep rallies along the end line to help keep the potent F&M attack in check.

Along with her defensive efforts on Sunday, Billhimer also posted a pair of assists in the opener against Bridgewater on Thursday. With that performance, she became the first back at Christopher Newport to register a pair of helpers in a single game since Bailey Miller accomplished the feat against Randolph-Macon on September 19, 2018.

In addition to Billhimer's work on the offensive end, Maddison Steele and Chloe Thompson both have a pair of goals this year, while Emily Evans and Emma Logue have one each. Overall, eight different Captains collected at least one point in the squad's season-opening victory against Bridgewater last week.

Virginia Wesleyan comes into Tuesday on a two-game skid after dropping a 5-0 decision to Washington (Md.) on Saturday following a 6-0 setback against Stevenson in the opener last Thursday. Stephanie Hoke has led the Marlins with four shots this season, while Emma Wehr has made 19 saves during her time in the cage.

After finishing 2021 with a 4-10 record, Virginia Wesleyan was slotted eighth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. The Marlins feature a roster that includes 11 veterans from last year, while head coach Ryley van der Velde is in her first season at the helm of the team.

In 15 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport boasts a 12-3 record in the series. The Captains won the most recent showdown, 5-1, during the 2019 campaign.

Following Tuesday's tilt, Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday when the squad hosts Haverford at noon.
