Alec Strause picking up a pair of wins in singles and one in doubles to earn a trip to the Round of 16 in both championship draws.
Strause paired with
Vincent Truong for an 8-5 win in their Round of 32 action on Friday, defeating Connor Coleman and Rider Yeaman from Washington and Lee. The Captains' tandem earned a first-round bye as the No. 4-seeded pairing in the tournament.
Also in the championship doubles draw was
Alex Seretis and
Ashton Legum, teaming up for an 8-4 win over Washington College's Landon Strober and Christian Gruyon. Tasked with facing the No. 9 seeded pairing from Haverford, Justin Minerva and Stefan Johnson, in the second round, the Captains' duo battled hard but suffered an 8-5 setback.
Rounding out the doubles wins on day one for CNU was veteran duo
Dawson Driscoll and
Matthew Dubuque in the B1 Draw Round of 16. The Captains' upperclassmen captured an 8-4 win over Zac Ashtiani and Anthony Casale from Franklin and Marshall and will play in the B1 quarterfinals on Saturday.
Strause and Truong also starred in singles play on Friday, as the two CNU players each earned first round victories in the championship bracket. Truong captured a 6-3, 6-3 win over Coleman and Strause advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over his Round of 64 foe from Stevens. In the second round, Truong suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to the No. 4 seeded James Yu (Johns Hopkins), but Strause rolled into the Round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hubert Parawa from Virginia Wesleyan.
On Saturday, Strause will vie for a spot in the quarterfinals against Washington College's Karl Hoegstedt. He will also pair with Truong with a trip to the doubles QF on the line against Mary Washington's Artis Hart and Andrew Cooper.
In the other singles draws,
Ahun Vodela was the standout for CNU, winning his Round of 16 bout against Grove City's Benjamin Jones. He will play against Mary Washington's Foster Evans in the B2 Draw quarterfinals on Saturday.
