LANCASTER, Pa. -- The 16th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will face its first road test of the season on Sunday at 11 a.m. when the Captains square off against Franklin & Marshall in a non-conference battle at Tyus Field.
Entering the weekend, both the Captains and Diplomats boast pristine 1-0 records after lopsided victories on Thursday.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at GoDiplomats.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a 6-0 triumph against Bridgewater on Thursday at Jennings Family Stadium. Against the Eagles, both
Maddison Steele and
Chloe Thompson deposited a pair of goals, while
Emily Evans and
Emma Logue added darts of their own. Evans also contributed an assist, becoming just the fourth player in program history to begin her collegiate career with a goal and a helper in the season opener.
Meanwhile, on the defensive side, the Captains allowed only a single shot, which
Lily Kerr brushed aside with five seconds remaining in regulation. On the back end,
Katie Abendschoen,
Brooke Billhimer, and
Marcella Sabbagh were especially effective in clamping down on Bridgewater's offensive rallies, while Kerr and
Gabi Gray combined for a perfect day between the pipes.
Overall, the 6-0 win equaled the second-largest margin of victory in a season opener in program history and the finest since a 9-0 triumph over Sweet Briar in 2009.
Franklin & Marshall also kicked off the season in fine fashion after doubling-up Susquehanna, 4-2, on Thursday. The Diplomats scored three times in the third quarter to overcome an early 2-1 deficit on the way to the victory. Carolina Riley led F&M with three points, while Molly Paulsen, Faith DiMantova, and Jessica Miller all scored as well.
The Diplomats are coming off of a 2021 campaign in which the program recorded its 12th consecutive winning season after finishing with a 9-7 mark. The squad welcomes back an impressive veteran contingent featuring seven seniors, who helped lead Franklin & Marshall to an appearance in the 2019 NCAA Division III National Championship as freshmen.
Sunday's showdown will mark the first meeting between Christopher Newport and Franklin & Marshall in program history.
After Sunday, the Captains will remain on the road for a 4 p.m. tilt at Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday.
