NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team captured the team's first win of the season this weekend as they took first at the Webb/Woollum Regatta hosted by the Captains in Hampton, Va. CNU earned the win over second-place Hampton University by 49 points, cruising to a win behind a dominant B division effort.Â
With a beautiful weekend for sailing in the Hampton Roads area, the Captains' hosted event managed to complete 18 full races with both A and B division racing simultaneously. The Captains averaged a score of 3.1 in A division and 3.56 in B division, leading from start to finish.Â
The B division boat opened the regatta with a win in the first race and went on to add two more bullets over the course of the weekend. They wrapped up the event with 64 total pints, ranking third overall and first in B division. CNU's A division boat had four wins and added four runner-up finishes to capture a second-place finish in division with 56 total points.Â
Brian Fox and
Carson Rozell sailed together in A division, picking up the top finish for the Captains. In B division,
David Grace and
Patrick Enos were in the boat together to finish third among the 18 boats competing.Â
The Captains won with 120 total points (56-64) while Hampton finished second with 169 points (72-97). Rounding out the top five were Washington College (Md.), George Washington University, and the University of Virginia.Â
CNU will be back in action with a pair of competitions this weekend. In singlehanded sailing, the men will take on the Carl Van Duyne Trophy hosted by Navy, while the CNU women will appear at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championships 1B event in Providence, R.I.Â
