RILEY CUP 

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team opened the 2026-27 season with a trip across the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel to the Riley Cup hosted by Old Dominion University. The Captains finished 14th out of 18 teams in an event shortened to just five races in A and B division due to inclement weather over the weekend. 

CNU finished with 137 total points including 65 in A division and 72 in B division. Berend Van der Meer sailed with Jacob Fleming in A division, capturing 14th place. The B division boat also finished in 14th place with Jon Matney and Braden Silveria sailing for the Captains. 

The first day was shortened to just four races before thunderstorms prevented further races. On Sunday, heavy rain came in early again and limited the action to just one race. The Captains snagged four 12th-place efforts with three straight in A division. 
 

NAVY WOMEN'S

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- In the first women's event of the 2026-27 season, the Christopher Newport Captains finished eighth at the Navy Women's Regatta hosted by the United States Naval Academy. CNU scored 341 total points with a 173-point effort in A division and 168-point showing in B division. 

In A division, Hannah Louise Roethel and Shari-Ann Tremblay sailed together to finish with 173 points in 16th place. The B division tandem of Corine Glickstein and Tamsin Brightbill finished in 15th place with 168 points. 

The Captains will return to action next weekend at the Chesapeake Invitational in Annapolis and the Kingsmill Cup hosted by William and Mary.
