Carroll Passes 3000 Assists in Saturday Split
Christopher Newport's Senior setter,
Sammy Carroll, eclipsed 3000 assists on Saturday as the Captains split their two matches in the Mt. St. Joseph Tourney.
Christopher Newport 3, Ohio Northern 1 | (20-25, 25-11, 25-23, 25-21)
First Set
A five point run helped the Polar Bears create a 22-14 advantage. The Captains took six of the next nine points, but it wasn't enough to stop ONU from taking the opening set.
Second Set
Two aces from
Rebecca Frey helped CNU jump out to a 9-3 lead. The onslaught continued with the Captains going on a 9-3 run that included two of
Maddie Carter's team-best 15 kills. Kills from
Sammy Carroll and
Megan James helped the Captains take the set's final three points.
Third Set
After taking a 2-1 lead, the Captains wouldn't gain another lead until regaining a 17-16 lead. The two sides were exceptionally close the entire set, but the Captains benefitted from three straight errors from ONU to go up 21-18. But the Polar Bears quickly erased that lead and tied the score at 22.
Megan James' kill gave the lead back to CNU, and after an error tied the score again, back to back kills from
Macy Burk and
Alyssa Dozier secured set three for the Captains.
Fourth Set
Three straight service aces from
Anna Dean set the tone early in the fourth set. Three kills from
Maddie Carter helped CNU score six points in a row and take a 14-7 lead. CNU didn't trail in the rest of the fourth set, and
Megan James clinched the set and match with the final two kills.
Transylvania 3, Christopher Newport 0 | (25-19, 29-27, 25-17)
First Set
Transylvania found success early in the first set and sprinted ahead 15-6. The Captains battled back with three kills from
Maddie Carter down the stretch, but couldn't complete the comeback as the Pioneers took set one.
Second Set
Facing set point, the Captains went on a 4-1 run that included kills from
Megan James and
Macy Burk to force their own set point at 26-25. Transylvania turned things around quickly and took four of the final five points in the second set.
Third Set
With an 18-15 lead, Transylvania scored eight of the final ten points of the set to clinch the set and match.
Macy Burk contributed 3.5 points for the Captains in the final set, but the Pioneers quieted the CNU attack.
