Christopher Newport opened the first of their three matches in the Mt. St. Joseph Tourney with a loss to the hosts, Mt. St. Joseph.
First Set (Mt. St. Joseph 25-18)
The two sides traded five-point runs, with CNU's tying the score at 10 and MSJ's helping them regain a five point lead. The Captains cut closer as
Megan James' service ace got CNU within four, but MSJ scored four of the next five points to take the first set.
Second Set (Mt. St. Joseph 25-21)
CNU was trailing by five halfway through the second set, but rolled off four straight points beginning with a kill from James.
Anna Dean scored the fourth point with an ace, but missed on her next serve that would've tied the set. Sammy Caroll and James had back-to-back kills to bring CNU within two again with the score 23-21, but MSJ gained the final two points off of attacking errors to take the set.
Third Set (Mt. St. Joseph 25-20)
Christopher Newport jumped out to a 5-2 lead after back-to-back kills from
Mackenzie Wright and
Abigail Draper and two aces from
Rebecca Frey. CNU fell behind after that run, but rallied back again from down to take a 13-10 lead after taking five straight points, including two kills from
Lainie Putt. The Lions stopped the CNU run and scored 13 of the next 16 points and went up 22-16. Kills from
Megan James and
Abigail Draper helped the Captains cut the lead to three, but MSJ finished off a three set win after the final three points.

- The Captains served up nine aces in the match, the second-most in a three set match this season.
- CNU's six blocks are tied for the most blocks in a three set match this season.

Christopher Newport will play two matches on Saturday in Cincinnati. They'll square off with Ohio Northern at 11am before Transylvania at 1pm.
