FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Three doubles victories highlighted the first day of action at the 2022 ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Fredericksburg, Va. on Friday, as the Christopher Newport women's tennis team opened up play. Top-seeded
Raine Weis and
Tessa Trate advanced to the Championship Draw Round of 16 and will play for a berth into the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Weis and Trate earned a first-round bye with their seeding, and quickly disposed of their Round of 32 opponents from Carnegie Mellon, 8-3. Tomorrow at 8:00 a.m., the Captains will face a familiar foe in Sweet Briar's Sofia Andrade and Ana Patino -- the Vixens appeared in last weekend's CNU Invite against
Kiersten Chang and
Kendra Womack. The winning tandem will advance to the quarterfinals immediately following their victory, with matches scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
In addition to the Captains' top tandem advancing, CNU also got a first-round win from
Megan Bauer and
Anna Campbell. The duo defeated Dickinson's Martine Fierro and Ari Goitz in a close match, 8-6. Also,
Logan Glen and
Eva Taylor earned an 8-4 win in the Blue A draw quarterfinals, defeating Meagan Donovan and Isabella Custard (Wash. and Lee).
After doubles play, the Captains advanced to singles action where they picked up a couple of wins in the first round of the championship draw. First, Womack breezed past Mary Washington rookie Haleigh Latta, 6-0, 6-1, before Weis added the final win of the day for CNU. The CNU sophomore outlasted Washington and Lee's Margaret Carlton in a back-and-forth battle, 6-7 (7), 6-2, 10-8, to advance to the Round of 32. Both Captains would be eliminated from the championship draw one match later as Womack fell to high-seeded Crystal Zhou (Carnegie Mellon) and Weis was locked in another duel before falling 5-7, 6-0, 10-6.
The second day of play will begin first thing Saturday morning with several Captains set for consolation play.
Tessa Trate will take on Alessandra Armoud (Ursinus),
Eva Taylor faces Irene Meng (Washington (Md.)), and
Anna Campbell will play Jenna Harrison (Franklin & Marshall).
