NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team opened the 2022-23 season on Friday with a pair of mock dual appearances to kick off the CNU Fall Invite at home on the Eyre Courts and the Marlin Fall Invite in Virginia Beach. Twelve different Captains saw action on Friday in what will serve as the season-opening weekend with more action planned for Saturday and Sunday in both locations. 
As a team, the Captains were split nearly 50-50 on the opening day, with a 3-3 record in six doubles matches and a 6-5 mark in 11 singles matches. The only unfinished match in singles play was one point shy of another Captains win before time was called. 
At the CNU Fall Invite, the Captains took on Hampton in a mock dual with a pair of doubles matches and five singles bouts. CNU secured a pair of singles wins as Eddy Porsymyr Hansen and 
Tyler Hyun each won in straight sets in their singles showings. Porsmyr Hansen defeated Emiliano Jorquera (6-4, 6-2) and Hyun disposed of Jeremiah Williams (6-2, 6-4). 
On the other side of the water, Christopher Newport snagged three doubles wins and four singles victories while taking on the host Virginia Wesleyan Marlins.

Dawson Driscoll and 
Ashton Legum had the best day for the Captains, winning in both singles and doubles. Legum paired with rookie 
Ryan Monroe paired for an 8-4 win over Hubert Parawa and Francis Cabaddu before moving into singles and capturing a hard-fought three-set win over Parawa in individual play (4-6, 6-2, 10-6). Bashir played with 
Peter Karanski for an 8-2 win against Bryce Jones and Jonas Juetz while also securing a win against Sai Challagundla in singles play (6-1, 6-2). Driscoll added an 8-6 victory with 
Jake Dolphin against Cam Perry and Challagundla before earning a straight set win over Jonas Juetz (6-1, 6-3). 
Rounding out the victories for CNU on day one was another straight-set showing from rookie 
Alex Seretis, dispatching of Bryce Jones in a final score of 6-1, 6-2. 
The Captains will return to action on Saturday for day two of the CNU Fall Invite and the Marlin Fall Invite and will conclude play at both events on Sunday.
