NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport University head women's basketball coach
Bill Broderick announced that
Julia Duggan and
Chantel Roberts have joined the staff as assistant coaches for the 2022-23 season.
"I am very excited to welcome Coach Duggan and Coach Roberts to the CNU Women's Basketball family," said Broderick. "The experiences the coaching staff has, both as former players and as high-caliber coaches, will be a great asset to the student-athletes in our program."
Duggan comes to Newport News after three years as an assistant coach at Endicott College where she helped guide the Gulls to the program's first-ever conference championship in 2019-20. Endicott reached the NCAA Tournament Second Round and finished the year with a 19-11 record with Duggan on the sidelines that season and added a 17-win campaign in 2021-22.
She joined the coaching ranks after an exceptional playing career at NCAA Division I Rider University before continuing her career while playing professionally overseas. An All-MAAC forward for Rider, Duggan finished her career with over 1,000 points and 800 rebounds while helping lead the Broncs to a 24-win senior season and a WNIT appearance. She went on to coach and play professionally in Germany with the TG Neuss Tigers where she nearly averaged a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds per game. Duggan also played with CJS Geispolsheim in France.
Roberts joins the CNU coaching staff after two years as an assistant coach at Chowan University. Roberts coordinated team travel and assisted with evaluating opponents and preparing scouting reports for the Hawks. She helped organize and plan practice while also overseeing student managers and serving as an academic advisor to the student-athletes.
Prior to her tenure as an assistant coach at Chowan, she also spent one season as a student coach with the Hawks following a season as the Future League Coach at King's Fork High School. She was named a WBCA "Thirty Under 30" selection in 2020 and also participated in the WBCA "So You Want to be a Coach" Program in 2018. As a player, Roberts was a first team All-CIAA selection in 2018 while serving as team captain at Chowan. She earned second team All-State accolades and was a First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.
Both Duggan and Roberts join the Captains' coaching staff for their first year this season and will be joined by
Terrance Gist for his second season.
The Captains have advanced to eight of a possible nine NCAA Tournaments since head coach
Bill Broderick took control of the program in 2012. CNU has reached at least the Round of 16 in all eight of those postseason tournament runs including the team's second Final Four appearance in 2017. Last season, Christopher Newport was 26-1 and earned the first No. 1 designation in program history after a 26-game winning streak. In nine seasons under Coach Broderick, CNU Women's Basketball is 224-42 with a winning percentage of 84.2 percent.
