LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Max Wayne became just the second standout in Virginia history to earn the state's Player and Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Warner Cabaniss was celebrated as the Rookie of the Year and Mikey Thompson was named the top coach as the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team hauled in a host of All-State honors from the Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Earning the league's top two awards, Wayne joined former Lynchburg legend Tyler Gallagher as the only lacrosse players in Virginia history to be named both the Player and Defensive Player of the Year. Meanwhile, he became just the second Captain to earn the state's highest honor after former star Matt Hayden was named the VaSID Player of the Year in 2017.

Along with Wayne, Cabaniss became just the third freshman in school history to receive Virginia's Rookie of the Year award, placing his name alongside Dylan Rice (2018) and Alex Brendes (2020). Rounding out the individual honorees, Thompson was named the state's top coach for the fifth time in his tenure. He was previously honored in 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2021.

Joining Wayne and Cabaniss on the first-team All-State squad, Coby Auslander, Andrew Cook, Phoenix Hines, Campbell Pozin, Dylan Rice, and Burke Widhelm also brought home top accolades. Additionally, Zac Hanway was named to the second-team All-State squad.

Overall, the eight first-team honorees equaled the most by any school in Virginia history, matching the impressive haul by the 2015 Lynchburg squad. The nine total selections also marked the most in program lore, eclipsing the seven award-winners from 2020.

Equally impressive, Rice and Wayne became the first-ever five-time honorees in school history. The two legends earned All-State accolades in each of their five seasons dating back to 2018. Additionally, Hines was celebrated for the fourth time in his career, while Auslander collected his second award.

Capping off one of the most remarkable seasons in Christopher Newport athletics history, Wayne was previously named the National Player and Defenseman of the Year by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. He was also a first-team All-Conference, All-Region, and All-American selection.

Anchoring the back line, Wayne ranked 10th in the NCAA with 55 caused turnovers, which also marked the third-highest total in school history. Additionally, he collected 51 ground balls and was one of only 14 players in the nation with at least 50 takeaways and 50 rollers during the year. Consistent throughout the season, he forced at least one turnover in all 20 games, including six in victories over Grove City on March 2 and No. 19 Ursinus on March 9.

A staple on the defensive unit, Wayne started all 84 games over the past five seasons, marking the longest "Iron Man" streak in program history. Along the way, the Ashburn, Virginia native finished his career ranked second all-time with 179 caused turnovers and fifth with 193 ground balls.

Bursting onto the scene during a fantastic freshman campaign, Cabaniss helped Christopher Newport control possession throughout the 2022 season. Starring as a faceoff specialist, he was named a USILA and USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American while also garnering All-League and All-Region nods. Additionally, he was honored as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year.

Making an impressive debut, Cabaniss established new single-season school records with a .651 faceoff percentage and 135 ground balls. His 228 faceoff victories also marked the second-most in program history. The Richmond, Virginia native won over 50 percent of his battles in 18 of his 19 appearances, including eight tests against nationally-ranked foes. He also set a school record with 17 ground balls in a win at Catholic on March 5.

Honored as a first-team USILA All-American, Auslander was a dynamic presence on the midfield unit. During his junior campaign, he established a new single-season school record with 46 assists, which also placed him 25th on the national charts. Meanwhile, the Pennington, New Jersey native also finished with 76 total points, while his six assists against No. 19 Ursinus on March 9 marked the most in school history against a nationally-ranked opponent.

Equally effective on the offensive end, Cook was a second-team USILA and USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American. During his first year with the Captains, he deposited 52 goals, which was the fourth-highest total in program history and the most by a midfielder. The Mechanicsville, Virginia native also ranked second in school history with seven man-up tallies, while his six total strikes against No. 16 Williams on March 30 marked the most by a Captain against a top-20 foe.

A disruptive force on the defensive side of the ball, Hines capped off a record-setting career as a first-team USILA and USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American. Starring as a long-stick midfielder, he caused 56 turnovers, which led the league and ranked ninth in the NCAA. His 50 ground balls also placed him second among LSMs in the conference. Overall, the Ashburn, Virginia native punctuated his career as the program's all-time leader with 187 takeaways.

Just as impactful on the defensive end, Pozin was named the USILA National Short-Stick Defensive Midfielder of the Year. A first-team All-American, he led all short-sticks in the league with 52 ground balls while posting 15 caused turnovers, including five in postseason bouts. Equally effective as a wing on the faceoff unit, the Virginia Beach native also contributed seven points on the offensive side, including two against No. 10 Gettysburg during the Mustang Classic on March 18.

A legendary member of the attack, Rice was a first-team All-American and the IMLCA Region 3 Offensive Player of the Year. During his final season, he established new program records with 72 goals and 105 points. His eight-goal eruption against Roanoke on February 12 also set a new single-game standard. In his career, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native finished as the school's all-time leader with 244 goals, 339 points, and 25 man-up tallies.

An imposing presence on the defensive unit, Widhelm was a second-team All-American for his work in 2022. During the season, the senior registered 34 caused turnovers, which ranked fourth in the conference and seventh on the program's all-time charts. A native of Richmond, Virginia, he recorded at least one takeaway in 15 of his appearances while also ranking second among the league's defensemen with 50 ground balls.

Excelling between the pipes, Hanway built a wall in the crease during his third season with the Captains. Selected as a USILA All-American, he established new school records with 18 wins and a sparkling 8.09 goals-against-average. A two-time Coast-to-Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, he also added a .540 save percentage and 161 total stops. Smothering the opposition, the Ocean City, Maryland native had at least 10 saves on seven occasions, including two in the playoffs and an 18-stop masterpiece during the regular season against No. 16 Williams on March 30.

Guiding Christopher Newport to its second straight appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight, Thompson oversaw a program that finished 2022 with an 18-2 record and spent three weeks as the unanimous No. 1 team in the USILA National Coaches Poll. Along the way, his crew claimed the program's first regular season Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship and ranked first in the NCAA in scoring margin after defeating its opposition by an average of 11.35 goals per game.

Thompson's team also ranked fourth in the nation in scoring offense (19.10 goals per game) and ninth in scoring defense (7.75 goals against average). Christopher Newport was the only program in the country to slot in the top-10 in both categories.
