VERO BEACH, Fla. -- In the first full year of collegiate athletics since 2018-19, the Christopher Newport University Department of Athletics swept the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference All-Sports Awards for the third time in the last four. For the fifth time in a possible seven since joining the league in 2013-14, Christopher Newport earned at least a share of the Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award by winning the trophy outright in 2021-22. CNU also earned the Men's Commissioner's Award and the Women's Commissioner's Award after a dominant performance across the board.
During the 2021-22 season, Christopher Newport won ten conference championships among the 18 conference sports and finished as runner-up in all eight remaining sports. The Captains' secured a 91.5 percentage total in the 2021-22 Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award standings while collecting 92.9 percent of the possible points in ten women's sports and 89.5 percent in the eight men's sports. CNU won the All-Sports Trophy by 18.8% over UC Santa Cruz.
Christopher Newport earned team championships in volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's outdoor track and field, and softball throughout the 2021-22 school year.
The conference office has not announced Commissioner's Cup Trophy winners since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2014, the league office has issued the award seven times with Christopher Newport winning the honor outright five times and tying with Salisbury once in that timeframe. It is the fifth time CNU has won the Women's Commissioner Award and the third Men's Commissioner Award for the Captains.
Including ten from this year, Christopher Newport has won 67 conference championships since joining the C2C (formerly the Capital Athletic Conference) in 2013-14. CNU currently ranks third behind only Mary Washington (212 in 32 seasons) and Salisbury (181 in 29 seasons) while winning at the highest clip in league history with nearly eight championships per year.
The C2C All-Sports Award was named in December 2007 to honor the 15 years of service by former CAC Commissioner Richard C. Cook. UC Santa Cruz won a pair of C2C titles in men's and women's cross country and finished second in the 2021-22 standings with a 72.7 percentage in the all-sports standings. Salisbury landed third with a 69.1 percent total while Mary Washington followed with 63.3 percent. Mills (32.1), Finlandia (31.3), Mount Mary (26.8) and Pratt (24.0) rounded out the standings in this year's trophy race.
