SALEM, Va. -Â Christopher Newport University will resume play at the NCAA Division III Softball Finals on Saturday, playing Berry at 1:30 p.m.
All games scheduled for Friday at the Moyer Sports Complex were postponed due to rain. Trine and Eastern Connecticut State were able to finish their game, which had been suspended by rain Thursday night, with Trine recording the victory.Â
There will now be six games played on Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The first two games of the day will be elimination games, as eighth-seeded WPI plays fourth-seeded Texas Lutheran at 9:30 followed by seventh-seeded Millikin vs. third-seeded Eastern Connecticut State at 11:30 a.m.
Keith Parr's Christopher Newport squad, the top-ranked team in the nation and top seed, will then take on the Vikings of Berry for the first time ever. Berry is 35-11 while the Captains are 43-1 after defeating WPI on Thursday, 8-6. CNU is now riding a 20-game winning streak following Thursday's victory.Â
The rest of the schedule for Saturday will have second-seeded Salisbury playing sixth-seeded Trine at 3:30 p.m. The 5:30 and 7:30 games will be decided based on what happens throughout the day Saturday, and by the end of play, the field will be cut down from eight to four teams remaining.
A victory on Saturday over Berry would mean the Captains would not play again until Sunday afternoon at 12 noon. The loser of the CNU/Berry contest will return Saturday night to play in the final game at 7:30 p.m.
Further updates on the schedule for the tournament will be posted on CNUSports.com as soon as they become available.
