NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University softball squad heads to Raleigh, N.C., on Sunday to conclude the regular season. The Captains, ranked first in the country for the fifth straight week, will take on the Avenging Angels of Meredith College. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Meredith softball complex.

The Captains are 33-1 and coming off an exciting sweep over second-ranked Salisbury on Wednesday at Captains Park. CNU compiled a record of 19-0 at home this season, and the Captains have now won ten straight games since losing their only game of the year so far at Averett University on March 27th.
Senior
Kaitlyn Hasty continues to lead the nation in home runs, hitting her 17th on Wednesday in the second game vs. Salisbury. Hasty, a two-time All-American, now has a school-record 51 career home runs, and is tied for 9th on the all-time home run list in Division III softball history.
The Captains now are tied for the most home runs as a team in the country with George Fox, as both squads have hit 63 long balls this season. CNU tops the nation in home runs per game with 1.85. Christopher Newport also leads the country in slugging percentage (.700), runs scored (332), shutouts (17), and winning percentage (.971). The Captains are second in the nation in runs per game (9.76), batting average (.397), and base hits (366).
Meredith College has a mark of 20-12 heading into a busy weekend. The Avenging Angels are hosting Greensboro College for a doubleheader Saturday before the Captains come to town for two on Sunday. CNU and Meredith met earlier this year at Captains Park, with Christopher Newport winning both ends of the twin bill.
Keith Parr's team won the opener, 11-3 in five innings, and then took the nightcap by a 9-0 final in five frames.The schools have met 33 times in the all-time series, which dates back to 1995, and the Captains own a 30-3 advantage.
Following Sunday's doubleheader, the Captains will begin preparing for the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference tournament. Salisbury, Mary Washington, and Christopher Newport will battle for the league crown and automatic NCAA Tournament bid at Captains Park in the double-elimination tourney set for May 5th through May 7th.Â
