Top-Ranked Captains Host Greensboro College for Sunday Softball Doubleheader

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University softball squad heads back into action Sunday afternoon at Captains Park. Keith Parr's team will host the Pride of Greensboro College in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The Captains, top-ranked in the nation for the second straight week, had their 23-game winning streak to start the season snapped last Sunday. CNU dropped the second game of a twin bill at Averett University, 8-5, to end the longest winning streak in program history. The Captains had won the opening game, 10-0 in five innings, over the Cougars.

As with Averett last week, Sunday's matchup with Greensboro will be a meeting with a former league-mate in the Dixie and USA South Athletic Conference. The Pride entered the weekend with a 15-5 record this year, and was scheduled to host Salem College for a doubleheader Saturday in Greensboro before coming to Newport News on Sunday.

The Captains and Pride have played 44 times, and CNU holds a 29-15 advantage in the all-time series, which dates back to 1986. The programs haven't met since 2017, and the Captains have won the last seven games in the series.

Christopher Newport leads the country in home runs with 46 through the first 24 games, and the Captains also top the nation in runs scored (249) and hits (268). Senior Kaitlyn Hasty is the top home run hitter in the country with 14 and also leads the nation in runs batted in (42), total bases (81), and slugging percentage (1.157). Hasty has set a new CNU record for career home runs, now with 47.
