Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Earlier this week, the ITA announced updated regional rankings for men's tennis with senior
Ryan Macy headlining the Christopher Newport selections ranked in both singles and doubles. Playing in their first match as the 8th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, the CNU men's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback at No. 22 Mary Washington.
Macy slotted in at No. 8 in the singles rankings and paired with
Alec Strause to pick up a spot at No. 4 in the doubles rankings. On Friday, the Captains were charged with taking on a nationally-ranked power led by their three regionally-ranked doubles tandems.
In the highly-anticipated bout at No. 1 doubles between Mary Washington's No. 1 ranked pairing and CNU's No. 4 ranked duo, it was the home team's veterans Moses Hutchison and Andrew Watson who secured an 8-3 win. Rishi Chankar and Nick Spera are ranked No. 11 and Christopher Newport's experience nearly won out as seniors
Paul Baron and
Mason Kolls dropped an 8-5 decision in the No. 2 bout. Finally, Cole Tecce and Peter Leese, ranked No. 14 in the Atlantic South, made it a sweep of doubles with an 8-2 win over
Eddy Porsmyr Hansen and
Ashton Legum.
Moving into singles play, three of the head-to-head battles were exceptional three-set matches as the Captains battled hard against their conference foes. At No. 2,
Alec Strause faced the No. 13-ranked singles player in the region in Rishi Charan Shankar and surrendered the first set 6-2. He rebounded for a 6-4 win in the second set and the match tipped by the narrowest of margins with a 7-5 win in the third for the Eagle.
Porsmyr Hansen and
Ahun Vodela each cruised to first-set victories at 3 and 4, but Watson and Tecce, respectively, bounced back to clear out the wins for Mary Washington.
Christopher Newport falls to 7-7 with the loss and will take a week off before returning home to take on Salisbury University at 1:00 pm next Saturday, April 9.
