NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The top two teams in the country square off for a softball doubleheader Wednesday at Captains Park. Top-ranked Christopher Newport, the top team in the national poll for the last five weeks, hosts second-ranked Salisbury University with first pitch set for 4:00 p.m.

SO FAR: The Captains are 31-1 overall and 2-0 in the C2C so far this season, while the Sea Gulls are 30-2 and also 2-0 in league play. The Captains swept a twin bill at Mary Washington on Saturday by scores of 4-0 and 6-0, while Salisbury last played a week ago, sweeping two over Catholic by scores of 7-1 and 6-1 in Salisbury, Md.
STREAKS: Keith Parr's squad opened the season with a 23-game winning streak, the longest in program history. It also marked the best start ever for the Captains. Since losing a game at Averett, the Captains have won their last eight games. Salisbury is riding a 17-game winning streak.
THE SERIES: The Captains and Sea Gulls have played 89 times, and the Captains hold a 44-43 lead in the all-time series. There have also been two ties in the series, which dates back to 1989. SU has won the last four games, and five of the last six, in the series.
CAPTAINS HIGHLIGHTS/HONORS:
Senior
Kaitlyn Hasty has set a new school record for home runs in a career, and has now hit 50. She passed Jessie Atkinson, who had 43, on the all-time list earlier this season. Hasty has been selected the National Player of the Week as well as the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week. She leads the nation in home runs with 16 and runs batted in with 55. She also tops the country in total bases with 98 and slugging percentage at 1.101.
Freshman pitcher
Kate Alger is 12-0 to start the season, and has been chosen the National Pitcher of the Week as well as the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week twice. She is 4th in the country in ERA (0.63).
Freshman left-hander
Jamie Martin is now 11-1, and was named the C2C's Pitcher of the Week this week after throwing her first career no-hitter last Saturday at Mary Washington. It was the first no no of the season for the Captains, and the 29th no-hitter or perfect game in program history.
Senior outfielder
Sarah Proctor has received the honors of National Player of the Week and also Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Hasty, Proctor, and Alger were included in the list of Top 50 prospects for the NFCA's National Player and Pitcher of the Year honors, which will be announced in June after the season.
Senior
Caroline Helmer was named the C2C's Player of the Week this week after going 7-for-13 with a home run and hits in all four CNU victories. Sophomore
Katie Currin was chosen the Player of the Week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference after hitting a three-run homer vs. Greensboro. Sophomore
Brooke Greaver was voted the Player of the Week in the C2C after smacking two home runs vs. Meredith.
Captains Head Coach
Keith Parr went over the 600-win mark for his career. Parr is in his 19th season leading the Captains.
NATIONAL STATS: Christopher Newport leads the nation in runs scored (318), home runs per game (1.84), slugging percentage (.701), winning percentage (.969), and shutouts (17). CNU is second in home runs (59), third in hits (346), third in runs per game (9.9), third in batting average (.398), fifth in on base percentage (.467), and sixth in team ERA (1.19).
NEXT GAMES: The Captains conclude the regular season this Sunday, traveling to Raleigh, N.C., to take on the Avenging Angels of Meredith College. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
