NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The top-ranked Christopher Newport University softball team heads back into action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Fredericksburg to take on the Eagles of the University of Mary Washington. The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
The Captains are 29-1 and coming off two victories on Thursday over William Peace University at Captains Park. CNU won the opener in six innings, 10-2, and then took the nightcap, 16-1, in five innings. Both games were shortened by the eight-run mercy rule.
Keith Parr's squad opened the season with 23 straight victories, and has now won six straight since suffering its only loss of the year at Averett University.Â
Christopher Newport has been ranked at the top of the weekly Top 25 national poll for the last four weeks, and the Captains have already surpassed their win total from a year ago when they finished 28-14.
The Eagles of Mary Washington enter play on Saturday with a record of 18-19. UMW dropped two conference games last Saturday at second-ranked Salisbury University by scores of 1-0 and 6-0. The Eagles have struggled of late, and have dropped eight of their last ten games after a 16-11 start.
The Captains and Eagles have played 66 times in the all-time series, and Christopher Newport has a record of 56-10 all-time vs. Mary Washington.

Following Saturday's games, the Captains will begin preparing for next Wednesday's showdown with second-seeded Salisbury. The Captains and second-ranked Sea Gulls will play twice at Captains Park beginning at 4:00 p.m.
