GRANTHAM, Pa. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will head north on Saturday for a noon battle against the 15th-ranked Messiah Falcons at the MU Turf Field.
Entering the weekend, the Captains sit at 5-5 on the season, including 2-2 on the road. Meanwhile, Messiah is 6-3 overall and 4-1 at home.
For those fans unable to attend the game, the hosts will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at GoMessiah.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a 16-11 victory at Lynchburg on Wednesday. Against the Hornets,
Zoe Dyer deposited five goals, while
Kelsey Winters handed out five assists.
Syd Guidi also added four goals and made a little history with 10 draw controls. Coupled with her 10 draws last Saturday against Roanoke, she became just the fourth player in school history to register double-digit draws in back-to-back outings.
On the defensive side,
Joely Stevens anchored the back line with two caused turnovers.
Taylor Schoolar also collected nine saves while recording her first win of the season. Along with previous victories by
Izzy Shefrin and
Lizzie Burgoyne, the 2022 Captains joined the 2017 squad as the only teams in program history to have three goalies secure at least one win during a single campaign.
In addition to Guidi's recent run of dominance, Christopher Newport has continued to excel on the draw this year. The Captains are averaging a league-high 14.70 draw controls-per-contest.
Emma Jackson leads the way with 46 this season, while Guidi and
Eleanor Collins have 32 apiece.
Additionally, on the offensive side, Christopher Newport ranks first in the conference in goals-per-game (13.70) and shooting percentage (.515). On a national level, the Captains are 15th in shooting percentage and 14th in assists-per-game (7.90).
Messiah enters Saturday on a three-game roll, including a 16-6 victory over Albright on Wednesday. During that contest, Abigail Evans and Rachel Delate both had five points, including four goals, while Grace Gormely added a hat-trick of her own. Gormely and Emma Hagg also had three takeaways apiece.
So far this season, Delate leads the team with 39 points, including 29 goals, while Amanda Wadsworth has tallied 11 assists. Defensively, Hagg has a team-high 15 caused turnovers, and Mackenzie O'Haver has a .487 save percentage and 9.36 goals-against-average.
Saturday's game will mark the third meeting between the two programs with the Falcons and Captains splitting the first two battles. Messiah won the most recent showdown, 14-7, in 2020. Winters contributed three goals during that game, and Dyer notched a pair of assists.
Following this weekend's outing, Christopher Newport will return to action on Tuesday when the squad comes home for a 5 p.m. test against St. Mary's (Md.).
