SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The Christopher Newport women's golf season opened up the spring portion of the schedule on Monday with the opening round at the Savannah Invitational in Georgia. The Captains are currently locked in a three-way tie for eighth as a team with an opening round 336. 

Senior Shreya Ganta (+4) is tied for 13th on the individual leaderboard to pace the Captains' team effort on day one. She sank four birdies in the round and logged a terrific back nine that saw her come back to the clubhouse in an Even par 36 strokes. Ganta birdied the second hole of the day, a 354-yard Par 4, and then added under par scores on 11, 15, and 17. 

Lauren Sims (+8) is also in the top-30 on the individual leaderbaord after firing an opening round 80. Sims kept her card very clean through the first 13 holes with 11 pars and just two bogeys. A tough finish to the day saw her score slip, but the veteran led the team with total pars and ranked tied for sixth overall with 12. 

Rookie Elena Rezac finished the round with three birdies including twice on Par 5 holes. She added four pars and finished her first day with an 11-over 83. Rounding out the top four scores was Hannah Bristow (+25) with two pars and a birdie. She went under par on the 359-yard Par 4 14th hole. 

As a team, the Captains are 48-over par with a 336 and are currently tied with Oglethorpe University and the University of Lynchburg. Leading the tournament is top-ranked Carnegie Mellon (+6) with No. 2 Emory (+7) and No. 4 Methodist (+8) stalking right behind.
