NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will look to continue its winning ways on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains host Kean in a non-conference showdown at Jennings Family Stadium.
Christopher Newport enters the game with a 2-0 record, including a 1-0 mark at home. Meanwhile, Kean is 0-1 after dropping its season opener against Stevens on Wednesday.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport was last in action on February 26 when the Captains kicked off a four-game homestand with an 18-11 win over Moravian. Against the Greyhounds,
Kelsey Winters established a new school record with 13 points, including 10 assists. Her 10 helpers marked the most by any player in the nation this season.
For her record-setting performance, Winters was celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Along with Winters' work,
Zoe Dyer drove home six goals against Moravian, while
Sloane McDonald added a career-high five strikes. Meanwhile, on the other end of the field,
Madi Rozgonyi came through with five takeaways. That equaled the eighth-highest total in program history and fell one shy of matching the school's all-time freshman record.
So far this season, Christopher Newport is averaging 12.50 assists per game, which stands as the second-highest rate in the NCAA. Meanwhile, the Captains also sit 10th in the country in scoring offense (19.00 goals per game) and 14th in both draw controls per game (18.00) and shooting percentage (.567). On an individual level, Winters is second in the nation in total assists (19) and fifth in points (25).
Kean opened the 2022 campaign on Wednesday with a 16-1 setback against Stevens. During the game, Emily Bretschneider and Katie Pileggi recorded two takeaways apiece while combining for five draw controls. Meanwhile, Kat Palaia scored her first collegiate goal, and Nicole Peters contributed six saves.
Entering the year, the Cougars were slotted fourth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll and earned the league's "Dark Horse" designation. Kean returned three All-Conference performers from last year's squad, including Pileggi and Rosalee Lachner, who were first-team selections. Bretschneider secured honorable mention accolades as well.
Saturday's showdown will mark the first-ever meeting between Christopher Newport and Kean.
Following this weekend's tilt, the Captains will remain at home for a 7 p.m. match-up against Haverford on March 9.
