NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Just one day after being voted the top team in the nation, Christopher Newport University will travel to Virginia Beach Wednesday afternoon for a softball doubleheader at third-ranked Virginia Wesleyan University. The twin bill is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. at Broyles Field.
The Captains, 21-0, moved into the top spot in the weekly Top 25 Division III poll on Monday. CNU had been ranked fourth last week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Virginia Wesleyan is off to a 17-3 start, and the Marlins are ranked third in the country this week.
Keith Parr's squad has set new program records this season for consecutive victories as well as best start to a season. This is the second time the Captains have been voted the top team in the nation, after reaching the number one spot during the 2019 campaign.
Senior first baseman
Kaitlyn Hasty was recognized Monday by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, named the Player of the Week for the second straight week. The Chesapeake native, a two-time All-American, is batting .525 through the first 21 games with 13 home runs and 39 runs batted in. She has set a new school record for career home runs, now with 47, passing Jessie Atkinson's previous high of 43.
Christopher Newport has out-scored its opponents by a score of 228-38, and the Captains have crushed 41 home runs. CNU's pitching staff has compiled an earned run average of just 1.55, and freshman starters
Kate Alger (7-0) and
Jamie Martin (6-0) have both been dominant.
The Captains are in the midst of an eight-game stretch of road games. CNU and Virginia Wesleyan have played 86 games all-time, with the Marlins holding a 49-37 lead in the series.
