NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Saturday afternoon at Captains Park, the fourth-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport host the 13th-ranked Maroons of Roanoke College. The first pitch of game one of the Top 20 softball doubleheader is scheduled to take place at 1:00 p.m.
Keith Parr's Captains are 17-0, and enjoying the best start to a season in program history. The Captains are coming off two victories over Lynchburg on Wednesday at Captains Park, 8-0 in five innings and 6-5 in ten frames. Senior
Kaitlyn Hasty, the National and Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, set a new school record for home runs in a career with her 44th in the opening victory over the Hornets. The All-American moved ahead of Jessie Atkinson, and is now hitting .553 this year with ten home runs and 32 runs batted in over the first 17 wins. CNU is batting .402 as a team with 35 home runs in all.
Christopher Newport, 9-0 at home this year already, also has the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. Freshman
Kate Alger picked up victories in both games on Wednesday, and is now 6-0 with an earned run average of just 0.60 for the year.
Roanoke heads into Saturday's action with a 14-2 mark, and the Maroons are coming off two wins on Thursday over Greensboro. The Captains and Maroons have played 24 games all-time, and CNU holds a 17-7 advantage in the all-time series.
Following Saturday's twin bill, the Captains will play their next eight games on the road. They will continue a busy weekend on Sunday with a double dip at Randolph College, with start time set for 2:00 p.m.
