Alger and Hasty Sweep Weekly Softball Awards as Captains Prepare for Monday Afternoon Doubleheader

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport softball hosts Juniata College Monday afternoon in a doubleheader at Captains Park. The first game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m., and Keith Parr's squad received two honors from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. Freshman pitcher Kate Alger was selected the Pitcher of teh Week and Senior Kaitlyn Hasty was named Player of the Week.

The Captains, who are ranked ninth in the country, won four games last week and  Alger had a 2-0 week for the undefeated squad. The Staunton, Va., product threw 11 shutout innings in victories over Kean and Muhlenberg. She struck out 18 batters in 11 frames and yielded just four hits and two walks. Alger is now 4-0 this season with an ERA of 0.75.

Hasty went 7 for 10 for a .700 average in the four CNU victories. Three of her seven hits were home runs and she drove in 11 runs in wins over Kean, Juniata, and two over Muhlenberg. Her on base percentage for the week was .714 and slugging percentage 1.800. Hasty is batting .543 for the Captains with eight home runs and 23 runs batted in over the first 13 games. She is just one home run shy of matching Jessie Atkinson for CNU's all-time home run record.

Christopher Newport is now 13-0 to open the season, and Parr recorded his 600th career victory leading the Captains over the weekend. The doubleheader Monday is the first of three at home this week for CNU  The Captains will host Lynchburg on Wednesday and Roanoke on Saturday at Captains Park.
