FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Kelsey Winters has been named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week after adding her name to the history books while leading Christopher Newport to a season-opening victory at Virginia Wesleyan on Friday.
The weekly honor is the fourth of her career. She was previously celebrated once as a freshman on March 2, 2020 before earning back-to-back awards as a sophomore on March 15 and March 22, 2021.
Guiding the Captains to a 20-2 victory over Virginia Wesleyan, Winters matched the single-game program record with 12 points. She joined Christopher Newport Hall of Famers Meghan Harkey and Ashton Marshall as the only players to reach that mark. Meanwhile, her nine assists established a new career-high and fell just one shy of matching Harkey's school standard set against Agnes Scott on April 3, 2010.
Adding more luster to Winters' performance on Friday, both her nine assists and 12 total points marked the most ever recorded by a Captain during a road game.
Kicking things off, the Harwood, Maryland native was simply unstoppable while helping Christopher Newport storm out to a lopsided lead. After opening the scoring with a strike in the first minute of action, she assisted on six of the squad's next eight tallies while snatching a 9-1 advantage early in the second quarter.
Continuing her assault later in the period, she converted a free-position attempt, added an assist, and deposited a dart on the doorstep to cap off a 10-point first half.
With little left to prove over the final 30 minutes, Winters chipped in with two more assists in the third period to wrap up her historic showcase. Overall, she played a role in 12 of the team's first 17 goals as Christopher Newport cruised to the season-opening triumph.
Aided by her efforts on Friday, Winters now has 79 career assists, which is tied for the sixth-most by a Captain. Additionally, in just 22 total appearances, she already ranks in the top-20 all-time with 124 career points.
Winters and the rest of her teammates will return to action on Saturday when the Captains kick off a four-game homestand with a 1 p.m. test against Moravian.
