The Captains punched their ticket to the league championship after toppling Mary Washington, 6-2, in the semifinals. Against the Eagles,
Abby Asuncion played a role in all six goals after contributing three strikes and three assists. Her nine points equaled the third-highest total by a Captain in program history, while she joined Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Wendy Wilson as the only players with at least three goals and three assists in a single game.
Along with Asuncion,
Emma Logue deposited her fourth game-winning goal of the year, which moved her into a tie for seventh on the school's single-season charts. Meanwhile,
Katie Abendschoen and
Emily Evans also found the back of the cage. Evans' tally marked her eighth of the season, tying Abendschoen and former star Jackie Kotoriy for the third-highest total by a freshman.
In addition to the offensive heroes,
Chloe Thompson blocked three shots against the Eagles, including two on back-to-back rips following a penalty corner in the third quarter.
Lily Kerr also registered three saves while securing her 11th victory of the year.
Overall this season, Asuncion leads the league with 11 assists and ranks third with 33 points and 11 goals. With her well-rounded season, she is just the fifth Captain to record at least 10 goals and 10 assists in a single campaign. Meanwhile, Logue slots fifth in the league with 23 points, and Kerr is first with a 0.44 goals-against-average and a stellar .887 save percentage.
On the other side of the field, Salisbury has been led by Allie Davis, who leads the league with 16 points and was honored as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year. She was joined on the first-team All-Conference squad by seven of her teammates, including McKenna Horner, who was named the league's Rookie of the Year.
The Sea Gulls boast three of the conference's top-five scorers as Davis sits second in the league with 37 points, while McKenzie Mitchell is fourth with 32 and Horner is fifth with 23. Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Salisbury ranks seventh in the NCAA with a 0.69 goals-against-average. Mackenzie Peacock has starred between the pipes with a .738 save percentage.
Salisbury and Christopher Newport last met on October 26 with the Sea Gulls securing a 1-0 victory in Maryland. Davis scored the lone goal off a feed from Molly Reardon, while Kerr posted three saves for the Captains.
Overall, Salisbury holds a 23-6 edge in the series. In the last four postseason meetings, the Sea Gulls walked away with league titles in 2018, 2019, and 2021, while the Captains won a double-overtime thriller in 2017.
