NFHCA Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Following a remarkable start to the 2026 campaign, the Christopher Newport field hockey team took over the top spot in the latest NFHCA National Coaches Poll as the Captains secured the No. 1 position in the most recent rankings, which were released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Tuesday morning.

After posting three victories against nationally-ranked competition during the first week of the 2026 season, the Captains moved up three spots in the latest poll to secure the No. 1 spot. Rounding out the top-five, Tufts was slotted second overall, while Salisbury, Johns Hopkins, and Middlebury followed in immediate succession.

The latest poll marks the eighth time in program history that CNU has earned the top spot in the rankings. Last year, the Captains were listed first for seven straight weeks from September 30 through November 11.

After advancing to the Final Four last season, Christopher Newport began 2026 ranked fourth in the preseason poll before returning to the No. 1 position on Tuesday.

CNU earned the recognition after kicking off the year with an incredible run. Starting the season on a three-game road trip, the Captains took down No. 23 Washington and Lee, 2-0, in the opener before beating No. 3 Babson, 6-1, and No. 10 Endicott, 3-1, during a march through Massachusetts over Labor Day weekend.

That three-game stretch marked the first time in program history that Christopher Newport defeated three consecutive nationally-ranked opponents. Additionally, the wins over Babson and Endicott were the first time the Captains knocked off back-to-back top-10 foes.

In the latest poll, Babson dropped to sixth in the nation, while Endicott fell to 13th. Meanwhile, Washington and Lee improved its positioning after vaulting up two spots to 21st in the country.

Along with their vanquished foes, the Captains have a series of duels against nationally-ranked competition in the coming months. During the regular season, CNU is slated to host No. 9 Messiah on September 19 before battling No. 5 Middlebury in a neutral-site showdown on September 27 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Then, Christopher Newport will rekindle its rivalry with No. 3 Salisbury at Sea Gull Stadium on October 17.

Should those rankings hold, the 2026 Captains would become just the third team in program history to face six top-25 opponents in the regular season. Previously, only the 2014 and 2025 squads faced equally challenging schedules.

CNU will make its home debut on Saturday at 11 a.m. when the Captains host New Paltz at Jennings Family Stadium.
