LEXINGTON, Va. -- Kicking off her senior season with an electric effort,
Riley Iasiello had three points, including the game-winning goal, while carrying the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team to a 2-0 triumph over No. 23 Washington and Lee on Tuesday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
Against the Generals, Iasiello opened the scoring with a missile in the waning moments of the first half before assisting on
Kate Engle's bullet in the 35th minute. With that eruption, she became only the 14th Captain to record both a goal and an assist in a battle against a nationally-ranked opponent. In that exclusive club, she joined a legendary list of standouts including CNU Hall of Famers Caitlin Cahill,
Marlene Lichty, and Belle Tunstall as well as current teammates
Caroline Hughlett,
Courtney Hughlett,
Avery Mast, and
Gigi Stephan.
Meanwhile, Engle continued to build her reputation as an opening day assassin. Her strike in the third quarter was her second career goal. Incredibly, both have come on opening day after the second-year star previously struck in last season's lid-lifter during her collegiate debut on August 29, 2025.
On the other end of the field,
Ella Fallen carved out her own spot in the history books. Making her first career start, she blanked the Generals while brushing aside Washington and Lee's only two on-target attempts of the game. With that performance, she became the first Captain to post a solo shutout in her first career start since Elexa Nosonchuk led the squad to a 2-0 win over Catholic on September 16, 2007.
In fact, in the entire history of the CNU field hockey program, only four goalies have completed a shutout in their first collegiate start. In that group, Fallen joined Nosonchuk as well as former stars Emma Stout and Samantha Pelstring.
In addition to Fallen, the entire defense was tremendous throughout Tuesday's tilt. The Captains surrendered just four total shots, which marked the lowest output by the Generals in a home game since they managed only three shots against Denison on September 9, 2018.
Adding another layer to the squad's defensive domination, Christopher Newport became just the second team since 2019 to shut out the Generals on their home turf. Incidentally, the only other squad to accomplish that feat was the 2024 Captains, who posted a 1-0 victory in Lexington two years ago.
Getting off to a fast start, CNU applied immediate pressure in the opening quarter. Early on, Mast had a blast blocked off a corner attempt. Shortly thereafter,
Caroline Hughlett had a floater knocked down by the keeper, while Iasiello and
Lindsey Loar were turned away on the interior. Keeping the pressure on, Engle had a shot spin past the right pipe, while
Mari de Castro almost connected on a bouncer along the same post before having a second-chance opportunity stymied by a defender.
Later in the period,
Willow Yost nearly converted a highlight-reel try. On a surge along the right side of the circle, the freshman made a diving attempt to snap a spinner around a defender. Unfortunately, her on-target tracer was handled at the last minute by the goalie.
In the second stanza, Washington and Lee found a little rhythm, but Christopher Newport stepped up on the defensive side. In the 19th minute, Fallen made a sprawling stop on a difficult bouncer as the Generals flooded the zone. Following the save,
Kelly Via and
Caroline Hughlett swallowed up a shooter at the top of the zone to prevent a secondary rip before
Courtney Hughlett escorted the roller out of harm's way.
Moments later, the hosts came storming back on another rush, but
Kendall Gibson slowed the surge in the right corner before Stephan made a lunging stab to block a shot on the interior. With the ball still loose,
Ellen Gallagher walled off an attacker who slipped free near the left post before
Caroline Hughlett won possession of the bouncer and sent it out to her sister, who cleared the threat.
Looking to answer on the other end,
Ellie Kidd drew a corner with pressure inside the left edge of the arc, but
Caroline Hughlett's ensuing shot was blocked. Refusing to let the hosts regain any momentum, Loar and Gallagher thwarted a pair of clear attempts near the right sideline, while Via stoned two deep runs along the opposite boundary.
Still throwing up roadblocks in the 29th minute, Loar came back again. This time, she plucked the ball off the stick of a midfielder along the center stripe. After gaining a little space, she connected with
Emma Weber, who flashed incredible vision. The sophomore threaded a pass through three Generals as Iasiello broke free along the circle. With only the goalie to beat, the senior pushed inside, pulled to her right, and wrapped a dart around the feet of the keeper for the game's opening blow.
Following the break, Washington and Lee tried to flip the script in the third quarter. Early on, the hosts generated a corner. Standing tall,
Caroline Hughlett burst out to the top of the circle and deflected the initial rope. Although the Generals kept possession, Fallen made a kick save on the follow-up attempt before Mast ripped the ball off her pads and cleaned up the play on the interior.
After surviving a scare on the defensive end, the offense went back to work. In the 35th minute, Gibson looped an aerial over two defenders along the left sideline. Collecting the pass, Iasiello charged up the turf but was cut off by a pair of Generals near the edge of the arc. Unfazed by the tight quarters, she wiggled through the crowd and blistered a rocket towards the center of the zone. From there, Engle boxed out a defender and deflected the shot into the bottom corner of the cage for her second career tally.
Holding a 2-0 lead, Christopher Newport never let Washington and Lee back into the game. The defense did not allow a single shot over the final 27 minutes of action. Meanwhile, CNU continued to push forward on the offensive end.
In the final stanza, de Castro helped jump-start a quick rush as she took a feed and found Iasiello streaking into the circle. With some space, the senior uncorked back-to-back blasts, but both were turned away by the goalie. Although Iasiello stuck with the play and tried to pry the ball loose, she was unable to jostle it free long enough to find de Castro, who slipped behind the defense near the right post. Later,
Calli Martin laced a pass to
Hailey Ward, who unleashed a turnaround bullet that just skipped by the cage.
Although Washington and Lee held up against the late onslaught, CNU cruised to the victory. Overall, the Captains held a 16-4 edge in shots and a 4-1 lead in corners.
In a series littered with edge-of-your-seat thrillers, Tuesday's game was a rare multi-goal victory in the storied rivalry between the two programs. The last time a team won by at least two goals came on September 23, 2017 when CNU collected a 4-1 win. It was also Christopher Newport's first multi-goal triumph at the W&L Turf Field since a 5-1 victory on October 21, 2012.
Additionally, Tuesday's masterpiece was the sixth straight opening day shutout by the Captains.
Christopher Newport will continue its early-season gauntlet this weekend when the squad travels to No. 3 Babson for a noon showdown on Saturday.
