NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Four members of the Christopher Newport cross country teams secured All-Region honors, while both squads posted top-five finishes during a well-rounded effort by the Captains at the NCAA South Regionals at Lee Hall Mansion.
Leading the women to a fourth-place finish,
Madi Rawlings placed 13th overall and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships. She was joined on the All-Region squad by
Eliza Dana, who placed 30th and helped the Captains wrap up the 6k with 175 total points.
Meanwhile, on the men's side,
Daniel Ferrante and
Nathanael Ferrante both garnered All-Region accolades for the second straight year after placing in the top-35. Overall, Christopher Newport finished fifth in the team standings after posting a score of 189.
"The conditions on the course got progressively more difficult during the day," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "The women's race was warm and humid, and by the time we got to the men's race, it was really hot. The course was a little bit soft from yesterday's rain, so it definitely didn't run as a fast course, but the team competed really well. With all of the illness running around campus and the area, we did our best to hold it off, but it definitely had its grips on a bunch of us heading into the weekend. Despite that, everyone bounced back and competed well."
Headlining Saturday's action, Rawlings earned a bid to the NCAA Championships after wrapping up the 6k in 24:05.4. With that performance, she became just the third Captain to earn an individual berth since 2015, joining former teammates Kaitlyn Ardrey and Logan Funk, who advanced last year.
After Rawlings, Dana also chipped in with an award-winning performance after placing 30th overall in 24:50.4. Meanwhile, two other Captains added top-50 efforts as
Mae Savoie came in 38th (25:20.3) and
Lex McGrail was 44th (25:36.0).
Rounding out Christopher Newport's top-five,
McKenzie Hurley scored for the squad after finishing 54th in 26:02.1. Shortly thereafter,
Megan Smith crossed in 26:19.9, while
Claire Garster wrapped up the race in 27:38.9.
On the men's side,
Daniel Ferrante posted a time of 26:12.9 in the 8k. That clocking placed him 14th overall, which marked the top finish by a Captain at the Regional meet since the 2017 squad parked four runners in the top-13. His performance also put him in a great position to earn an at-large berth to Nationals. Final bids will be announced on Sunday.
Along with his twin brother,
Nathanael Ferrante also nabbed All-Region accolades after finishing 24th in 26:57.4.
Nick Tolarchyk posted a top-50 showing as well after crossing the line in 27:31.9, which placed him 38th in the field.
Also adding top-five efforts on the squad,
John Vogel was 54th (28:06.3) and
Cooper Albright was 59th (28:25.1). Rounding out Christopher Newport's competitors,
Luke Tompkins chipped in with a time of 28:46.6, and
Luke Hawkins finished in 29:00.4
The NCAA Championships will take place on November 19 at the Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Michigan.
