MECHANICSVILLE, Va. -- The Christopher Newport cross country teams will begin the 2026 campaign on Saturday morning when the Captains travel to Pole Green Park for the Spider Alumni Open in Mechanicsville, Virginia.
Action gets underway with the men's 6k at 9:08 a.m. Later, the women will take part in the 4k beginning at 9:50 a.m.

This year's edition of the Spider Alumni Open will feature representatives from 17 schools across all three levels of the NCAA. Along with a variety of Division III squads, including Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington, the Captains will face runners from eight Division I programs. That group includes perennial power Georgetown, whose women's team is ranked 29th in the country. The Hoyas also received votes in the national poll on the men's side.
Currently, 27 Captains are slated to compete in Saturday's meet. Among those, 18 standouts will be making a return trip to the competition, while nine newcomers are on track to make their collegiate debut.
Headlining the veteran portion of the roster,
Sarah Dake established a new school record in the 4k during the 2025 meet after finishing in 14:35.0. Meanwhile,
Kayla Lopez clocked in at 15:04.7, which was the second-fastest mark in program lore. Additionally, fellow returners
Courtney Mudd,
Isabella Phillips, and
Sarah Bland all placed among the top-100 finishers in last year's star-studded field as well.
On the men's side,
Evan Young traversed Pole Green Park in 19:15.9 last fall, which was the fifth-fastest 6k time in program history. Moments later,
Clayton Rankin wrapped up the race in 19:20.9, which placed him 48th overall. Rounding out the top returning veterans,
Kevin Farnsworth came in 84th at last year's meet with a time of 20:19.3.
Following Saturday's action, Christopher Newport will return home for the CNU Invitational at Lee Hall Mansion on September 18.
