Wednesday's battle will be a rematch of the regular season finale in which Christopher Newport knocked off Mary Washington, 3-0, on Saturday. During that showdown,
Emma Logue landed her third game-winning goal of the season, while
Lainey Pratzner and
Katie Abendschoen followed with second-half strikes.
Along with the offensive heroes,
Lily Kerr made six saves on the way to her seventh shutout of the year. That matches the all-time single-season program record, established by former All-American Bailey Lien in 2013. Meanwhile,
Marcella Sabbagh also collected her 14th career defensive save against the Eagles and deflected two other shots during a stellar performance on the back line.
Overall this season, Christopher Newport has allowed just 0.65 goals per game, which stands as the fifth-finest rate in the NCAA. Meanwhile, the squad also sits sixth in the nation with a fantastic .845 save percentage and seventh with 10 shutouts.
On an individual level, Kerr is second in the country in both save percentage (.917) and goals-against-average (0.32). Additionally,
Chloe Thompson and
Brooke Billhimer rank in the top-100 nationally in defensive saves. Thompson has stopped four shots during the year, while Billhimer has stoned three.
Offensively, Logue and
Abby Asuncion are tied for fifth in the conference with eight goals apiece. Asuncion is also third with eight assists and fourth with 24 points. Sabbagh,
Maddison Steele, and
Emily Evans all have seven goals as well.
Mary Washington also features several nationally-ranked performers on the defensive side of the ball. Tally Vaughan is 25th in the NCAA with six defensive saves, while Caroline Porter is tied for 46th with four stops, including one against the Captains on Saturday. Additionally, Bailey McNabb leads the league with 118 saves.
On the other end of the field, Emma Bernard boasts a conference-high 41 points and 16 goals. She also slots second among league competitors with nine assists. Along with Bernard, Paige Stewart has five goals and 15 points.
In 23 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 17-6 edge in the series. Wednesday's game will also be the fourth match-up in postseason action with the Captains recording victories in the league playoffs in 2014 and 2017, while the Eagles won an overtime thriller in 2016.
The survivor of the semifinal showdown will advance to the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship at No. 1 Salisbury on Saturday.
