The Captains won their third and fourth straight matches to finish 3-0 on the weekend. On Saturday, they took down Virginia Wesleyan and Marymount.
Christopher Newport 3, Virginia Wesleyan 1 | (17-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-15)
First Set
Virginia Wesleyan built their lead in the first set with several small swings that saw them lead by as many as ten late in the set. The Captains rallied to get back within six, but the Marlins held them off and took the first set.Â
Second Set
Two aces from
Rebecca Frey turned the tide of the match as CNU took the first three points of the second set.
Alyssa Dozier served an ace of her own and added six kills in the second set as the Captains jumped out to a lead of ten. Down the stretch, kills from
Mackenzie Wright,
Sammy Carroll, and
Maddie Carter helped CNU close out the second set.
Third Set
VWU scored the first four points of the third set, but the Captains took the next four. That trend continued through most of the third set until CNU managed to create separation with a 6-2 run that gave them a 22-16 lead. A kill from
Abigail Draper and two from
Sammy Carroll saw the Captains take a 2-1 set lead.
Fourth Set
Christopher Newport posted five blocks in the fourth set as the Captains stifled Virginia Wesleyan. WVU hit -.125 in the fourth set and the Captains took advantage and doubled up the Marlins at one point with a 24-12 lead.
Lainie Putt's kill took the set and match for CNU.
Christopher Newport 3, Marymount 0 | (25-22, 25-14, 25-19)
First Set
Trailing 20-18, Christopher Newport took six of the next seven points to shift the momentum to CNU. The Captains saw kills from
Abigail Draper,
Alyssa Dozier, and
Mackenzie Wright help them finish the first set on top.Â
Second Set
CNU withstood a couple of Marymount runs and responded in kind to stay way ahead in the second set.
Maddie Carter posted seven of her team-leading 13 kills in the second set while CNU took eight of the final nine points to win the second set and go up 2-0 in the match.
Third Set
Mackenzie Wright and
Abigail Draper combined for five straight kills as part of a 6-0 run for the Captains. Later, with a 22-19 lead,
Lainie Putt's kill preceded back-to-back kills from Wright to clinch the match for CNU.

- The Captains hit a season-best .413 in the win over Marymount.
- CNU also had a season high 16 total blocks in the win over Virginia Wesleyan. It's the third-most blocks in a four-set match in school history.
- Alyssa Dozier had her career high of 19.5 points and eight blocks against Virginia Wesleyan.
