Â
Saturday's game carries extra meaning because the winner will lock up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. With that spot, the victor will serve as the host for the semifinals of the league playoffs, which will take place on Wednesday, November 2.
Â
Along with the postseason implications, Saturday's game will also serve as Christopher Newport's annual Senior Day. Prior to the contest, the Captains will honor the accomplishments of the seniors during an on-field celebration. The 2022 class includes fourth-year members
Morgan Arthur,
Abby Asuncion,
Emma Logue, and
Marcella Sabbagh as well as third-year standout
Vivian Pope and first-year star
Alexis Morales.
Â
Together, the veteran contingent has served as the backbone of this year's squad, which has climbed as high as 16th in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll. Through their first 16 games, the Captains rank eighth in the nation in goals-against-average (0.69), 11th in save percentage (.828), and 12th in corners per game (11.12). Christopher Newport has also outscored its opposition by an average of 2.81 goals per contest, which stands 14th in the country.
Â
On an individual level, Asuncion and Logue have combined for 43 points and 15 goals while earning a pair of Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week awards this season. Meanwhile, Sabbagh and Morales have also combined for three Defensive Player of the Week honors. Rounding out the seniors, Arthur has started 15 games on the midfield unit, and Pope has chipped in with five points while seeing action in 12 contests, including a start against Concordia (Wisc.).
Â
Along with the seniors, freshman
Lily Kerr has been exceptional during her debut campaign. The first-year phenom currently ranks second in the NCAA in save percentage (.905) and goals-against-average (0.35). Her six shutouts are also tied for the second-highest total in program history.
Â
On the other side of the field, Mary Washington comes to town boasting the conference's leading goal-scorer. Emma Bernard currently ranks first in the league with 16 goals, nine assists, and 41 total points. Sydney Keating also slots fourth among conference competitors with six assists, and Paige Stewart is second on the team with five goals.
Â
Defensively, the Eagles have been led by Bailey McNabb, who sits first in the league with 108 saves. Mary Washington also slots 13th in the NCAA with 15 defensive saves, including a team-high six stops by Tally Vaughan. That total places her 21st on the national charts.
Â
Saturday's tilt will mark the 23rd all-time meeting between the two programs with Christopher Newport holding a 16-6 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains posted a 4-0 victory in Fredericksburg, including goals by Sabbagh and
Katie Abendschoen.
