MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Riding a seven-game winning streak, the Christopher Newport field hockey team will take its show on the road this week when the Captains travel to Rhodes for a noon battle on Friday at Mason Field.
Entering the contest, Christopher Newport boasts an 11-3 record, including a 4-1 mark on the road. Meanwhile, Rhodes is 10-1 with a 5-1 ledger at home.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at RhodesLynx.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Friday's bout will mark Christopher Newport's first road game since October 2. The Captains are coming off of a four-game homestand in which the squad outscored its opposition, 12-1. During that stretch,
Abby Asuncion led the team with 10 points, including four assists.
Marcella Sabbagh also added three goals and helped anchor a defense that held the opposition to a microscopic .028 shooting percentage.
In the team's last outing, Christopher Newport snapped Susquehanna's nine-game winning streak with a 4-1 triumph on Monday. During that bout, Asuncion, Sabbagh,
Alexis Morales, and
Emily Evans all found the back of the cage. Meanwhile, on the defensive side,
Brooke Billhimer blocked a season-high three shots, while
Lily Kerr made three saves to earn the victory.
For her recent run of domination, Kerr was celebrated as the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday. The freshman phenom currently ranks second in the NCAA with a 0.32 goals-against-average and a .906 save percentage. Christopher Newport's eight shutouts also stand as the fifth-highest total in the country.
Meanwhile, on the offensive side, the Captains rank 20th in the nation in scoring offense. The team is averaging 3.71 goals per game and has multiple strikes in each of its last six outings. Especially adept at drawing corners, Christopher Newport is averaging 11.43 corners per contest, which is the 13th-highest rate in the nation.
Just as dominant lately, Rhodes comes into Friday on an eight-game winning streak. That run includes six shutouts, highlighted by a 1-0 double-overtime thriller against DePauw last month. Overall this season, the Lynx rank 12th in the nation in scoring offense (4.00 goals per game) and 13th in scoring defense (0.80 goals-against-average).
On an individual level, Sophie Croci is averaging 3.55 points per game, which ranks sixth in the NCAA. Meanwhile, Riley Marzola is 10th in the country in goals-against-average with a 0.67 mark. Additionally, Sheela Vasan has nine goals this season and sports a team-best .333 shooting percentage.
Friday's showdown will be the 11th all-time meeting between the two programs with Christopher Newport holding a 10-0 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains picked up a 3-1 win in Newport News.
Christopher Newport will return to action on October 26 when the team travels to No. 3 Salisbury for the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference opener at 5 p.m.
