NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport field hockey team will face its third top-20 test of the season on Wednesday at 6 p.m. when the Captains host No. 13 Shenandoah in a non-conference tilt at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the midweek battle, Christopher Newport currently sits at 9-3 on the season, including 5-2 at home. Meanwhile, Shenandoah is 12-0 overall and 6-0 on the road.

The Captains come into Wednesday riding a five-game winning streak. During that stretch, the squad has outscored its opposition, 13-1, while recording four shutouts. Over the weekend, the team posted back-to-back blankings with a 4-0 triumph over Centre on Saturday before toppling Roanoke, 2-0, on Sunday.
For their work during those two games,
Abby Asuncion and
Marcella Sabbagh swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards. Asuncion led the squad with six points last week after collecting two goals and a pair of assists. Meanwhile, Sabbagh anchored the defense and recorded her 13th career defensive save while also converting her fourth penalty stroke of the year against Centre.
Along with Sabbagh,
Brooke Billhimer and
Chloe Thompson also played all 120 minutes during the two shutouts. Additionally,
Lainey Pratzner had an assist in both contests, and
Emma Logue landed the game-winner in the triumph over Roanoke.
Overall this season, Christopher Newport ranks eighth in the NCAA in scoring defense (0.75 goals-against-average) and 16th in scoring offense (3.83 goals per game). The squad's seven shutouts are also tied for the fifth-highest total in the country, while freshman
Lily Kerr ranks second in the nation in goals-against-average (0.27).
Shenandoah comes to town with an unblemished record after knocking off its first 12 opponents of the year. On Saturday, the Hornets continued their roll with a 2-1 triumph at No. 19 Lynchburg. Trailing by one entering the final stanza, Mairead McKibbin and Claudia Lenahan added late tallies to lead the come-from-behind victory, while Taylor Swann contributed 12 saves to secure the win.
Overall this season, Shenandoah leads the country with a 6.08 goals-per-game average. Headlining the offensive standouts, McKibbin ranks first in the NCAA with 21 goals, while Farren Winter is second in the nation with 11 assists. Kelsey Jones is also tied for 15th among all players in the country with 33 points, and Swann is 18th overall with a 0.89 goals-against-average.
In seven previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 7-0 edge in the series. The two teams have not met since the Captains notched a 7-1 victory in 2013.
Following Wednesday's tilt, Christopher Newport will cap off a four-game homestand on October 17 with a noon showdown against Susquehanna.
