HOUSTON, Texas -- Due to rain showers in the Houston area, the second round of the DIII National Preview was cancelled and final scores reverted back to the first round finish for Christopher Newport women's golf. Rookie Alex Delgado (+4) tied for 15th in her first career tournament to lead the way for the Captains. 

Delgado was off to a hot start on the second day, carding four pars and a birdie through her first five holes before tournament officials made the decision to cancel play for the remainder of the day. The CNU freshman had moved into the top-ten on the individual leaderboard after the limited action, just five strokes off the pace set by George Fox's Alison Takamiya. 

The Christopher Newport freshman set the program record for lowest round in a debut with a 76 (+4) both in relation to par and number of strokes. It is also ranks tied for the seventh finest round by a freshman in the five-year history of the program. She recorded six three birdies and eight pars in the first 18 holes of her collegiate career. 

Finishing just one stroke behind Delgado was All-American Shreya Ganta, firing a five-over 77 on the first day. With a pair of birdies and ten pars, Ganta had a consistent performance in her first showing since the 2021 NCAA Division III Championships. It served as her tenth career round at 77 or better. 

Lauren Sims (+8) notched a team-high 11 pars in the first round and wrapped up the event tied for 40th. Elena Rezac (+12) and Cameron Marshall (+36) rounded out the Captains' starting lineup on Monday. 

As a team, the Captains fired a 317 for a 29-over showing. Taking 11th place, CNU trailed the leaders by just 17 strokes. 

Christopher Newport will return to action on October 4-5 at the Washington and Lee Generals Invitational.
