LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 14th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will continue the 2021 campaign this weekend when the Captains travel to Washington & Lee on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. before heading to Roanoke on Sunday for an 11 a.m. test.
Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport currently sits at 1-2 on the season. Meanwhile, Washington & Lee is 2-0, while Roanoke is 0-1.
For those fans unable to attend the games, both Washington & Lee and Roanoke will provide live stats and a video stream of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
So far this season, Christopher Newport has displayed a stingy defensive unit, which has allowed only six on-target shots. That total marks the lowest through three games in program history. Among the individual standouts,
Izzy Diz was honored as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts, while
Brooke Billhimer and
Vivian Pope have been equally dominant on the back line. Meanwhile,
Marcella Sabbagh chipped in with her seventh career defensive save against No. 10 Kean on Sunday, which moved her into a tie for eighth on the program's all-time leaderboard.
On the other side of the field,
Mauri Ware,
Abby Asuncion, and
Katie Abendschoen have all registered multi-goal efforts this season, while
Emma Logue added a key dagger against Kean during last weekend's nationally-ranked battle.
In its first three games, Christopher Newport has also put an impressive youth movement on full display. Among the freshmen, Abendschoen and Billhimer have both started the first three games of the season, while
Lainey Pratzner cracked the lineup against Kean, and
Maddison Steele deposited a goal in the season opener. Meanwhile, sophomore
Chloe Thompson has also started the first three games of her career after her freshman campaign was disrupted by CoVID last fall.
On Saturday, the Captains will square off with a talented Washington & Lee squad that has gotten off to a great start with back-to-back 3-0 victories against Kenyon and Denison. The Generals, who were slotted second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, have been led by Freddie Tobeason. She currently leads the squad with two goals, both of which were game-winners.
Defensively, Sarah Amil has yet to allow a goal while posting a pristine 1.000 save percentage after brushing aside all four attempts that she has faced. Overall, Washington & Lee has only allowed eight total shots so far this season.
On Sunday, Christopher Newport will face a Roanoke squad that is coming off a hard-fought 3-2 overtime setback against Mary Washington on September 2. The Maroons held a two-goal lead entering the fourth quarter after Emilee Wooten scored twice in the span of 90 seconds during the third quarter. However, the Eagles fought back and registered a pair of strikes in the fourth before adding the clincher in the 62nd minute.
Roanoke was picked fourth in the ODAC Preseason Poll after compiling a 6-3 record during a modified 2021 spring campaign. The Maroons welcome back three All-League performers from last year, including Wooten, who was a first-team selection. Alexis Wright and Martha Hurley were also celebrated by the conference in the spring.
Saturday's match-up will mark the 17th meeting between Christopher Newport and Washington & Lee with the Captains holding a 14-2 edge in the series, including a 1-0 win in 2019. Meanwhile, the program has faced Roanoke eight times while boasting a 5-3 record in the series.
Following this weekend's action, Christopher Newport will return home on September 15 for a 6 p.m. battle against Catholic.
